Geisha,

I've been on both ends of that kind of phone call. I once managed a payday loan office, and of course I've fallen behind on a bill or two.

Once when I was trying to get a payment commitment from a customer with a past due loan, I left a "door knocker" on the guys front doorknob. A "door knocker" is just a sealed placard that we hang on the door announcing our attempt to contact them and asking them to call us back. The guy called me back when he got home from work and threatened to kill me if I ever came anywhere near his house again. Then he hung up.

So I reported this to my district manager, who directed me to stop all attempts to contact the customer and to immediately file in small claims court. When the sherrif came to his house and served him with the court summons, he called me up in a whiney tone of voice and was practically crying, "Why did you have to take me to court, couldn't we just work out payment arrangements?" Idiot!

On the other hand, I have a utility company that calls me now and wants payment for a past due balance. Now I want to pay this off and will make payment arrangements as soon as I am working again. But I keep getting this woman calling me who asks me the most ridiculous questions, like:

"Don't you have any family members you can get the money from?"
"Can you take out a loan to pay this?"
"Can't you borrow the money from friends?"

And she does it in this almost angry tone of voice. I think she really should be in a different line of work ... she is probably going to have a stroke some day. I have been honest with her and told her that there is no money and as soon as there is money I will make payment arrangements. And I know lots of people lie to them, but jeezus, be reasonable!

And I have a cellular company that over billed me by $4000.00.

Yes, you read that right ... four thousand dollars.

I had free "mobile to mobile" and free "nights and weekends" on this service, and yet for two months I got billed for every one of those calls. I have case numbers and documentation from four separate attempts to get it straightened out with their customer service department. I have all the bills proving that I do not owe this money. But their collections people would always say things to me like, "Well of course you owe it. Our computer wouldn't make a mistake."

It's been a couple of years of drama and it screwed up my credit. My legal recourses are limited, so I just keep dealing with the collection companies now. A new one gets my case about every six months. They call me, we have a short conversation where I explain my side and they insist I must owe the money, cause Cingular wouldn't be trying to collect the money if I didn't owe it (I hate circular logic.)

So I've got it down to a shorthand. Now when they call and identify what they are calling about, I just say "Take me to court!"

The stunned silence is always followed by "What?"

And I say "I don't owe this money and I have no intention of paying. Stop calling me and take me to court."

And then when the person either fumbles to answer or remains silent for a bit, I say "I'm hanging up now. Have a nice day."

I wish customers would just be more courteous to people who have to call them to collect. I wish collection callers could be more civil too. I guess is says something about human nature, but it's a sad state of affairs.

I'm at the airport and I'm waiting to board my flight. I'm sitting at the "Bunkhouse Cafe" resturaunt (must be Texas, eh?) and I just had the nastiest ham and egg muffin ever. It must have sat under the heat lamp too long. The muffin was wrinkled, damp in parts and toughly dry in others. The ham was rubbery. The egg was fine, amazinly enough! Since I land in Minneapolis at 1:30, I didn't want to wait that long to eat.

Good news is, the hazelnut coffee with half and half is pretty darned tasty!

Tenet's right. You are an idiot!

But don't worry. If you disagree with your parents about whether your education is important or not, it's okay. The world always needs ditch diggers!

I wish I could say that I give a rat's ass, but I don't. If you want to run away and live on the streets, that's your problem.

Have a nice life.

I believe my job interview went well, the prelimenary interview was not as bad as I thought it might be. Of course I will have to return and do another, that is the way state operates in certain areas. I am soon off to go for another with a bank. I need another source of money and I feel I can do better and do deserve a better job than what I have had currently. After this is all said and done, I do believe I will have some wine. I am feeling the taste buds tingle for a merlot or even a pinot noir. Now that I think of it perhaps even a Shiraz is in order! Decisions decisions.

A tip from someone who used to be Homeless.

The garbage cans near any McDonald's offer some tasty treats.

If you get to them before the flies do.

Oh and Newspaper stuffed into your clothes keeps you warm at night.

But try NOT to sleep if you go to a homeless shelter.

Bad things happen when you sleep.

Have Fun!!

I don't know how old you are, but I'd guess you're a young teenager. So I'm not gonna just tell you your problem is bullshit and leave it there, because at your age, who hasn’t had a drama overload at some point?…

Are your parents being harsh demanding all A's? Yes, I think so, and I do sympathise. However, if you run away, you will ruin your life. Plain and simple. You'll miss the next few years of school, and good luck getting a job. (That's if you're lucky enough to survive that long.) My advice is to just say to yourself, "okay, this is what I have to do to fix this [pick up your grades]. So I'm gonna have a go." Like I said, I do think your parents are being a little harsh. But if they see you're trying, maybe they'll ease up a little. If, on the other, you run away, all they're gonna see is a spoiled brat who doesn't like to be told no. And if life on the streets turns out to be more than you can handle, they may not take you back - ever think of that? Are your parents perfect? Probably not. But if you try to meet them in the middle, at least you can rail against them with a clear conscience if they throw it back in your face. And - sorry to go all "old" on you - you have a roof over your head, access to a good education, and parents who at least care enough to make sure you damn well use it. On the balance of it, kid, things could be a lot worse.

Is it gonna be fun being holed up in your room studying? No, probably not. But read E_P_S's account of life on the streets. That sounds like a hell of a lot less fun to me.

Think of it this way: a year, out of your whole life, isn't that long. If you stay, work it out, try to meet your parents halfway, and pick up your grades, then this time next year you'll have an okay relationship with them and qualifications that give you a shot at a bright future. If you run away, then this time next year - presuming you're still alive - you could be anywhere: sleeping in a dumpster, turning tricks to survive, digging through bins for food which you'll have to pick the mould off before you can eat. Please think about it sensibly before you ruin your life beyond all repair. I know it can be tough being a kid. If it's any comfort, from what I hear it's not much easier being a parent. It's your call. But if you choose a shitty life over a shitty year, I'll be forced to concur with those who call you an idiot.

Teen drama happens. I don't think the fact that you considered it, necessarily makes you an utter waste of space, especially if you're as young as I think you are. But if you really think about what you're suggesting, then go ahead and do it after someone who's been there has basically told you it's hell on earth... then yeah, I'll make an idiot banner and wave it every time you post. Just sleep on it, for christ's sake. Think about it.
