Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

The Dresden Dolls
When I introduced myself in the newbie forum, i mentioned that i like the dresden dolls. most of the people posting in that thread just argued about them and whether they are punk or not. since everybody seems so keen to argue about them i'm starting a thread. do you like them? hate them? why?

I don't like them. But I haven't heard much of them. The only time I heard anything from them was when they opened for Nine Inch Nails a couple years ago. They weren't impressive at all, in my opinion.

Their music sucks, and they dare to call it punk.
That's what I said before. Why did you ask again?

Good goth...I have many thoughts on them. I think that they, personally, manipulate the aesethetics of music. How? They claim to be punk, as maggot stated, they insulted our music scene and heavily stereotyped the boundries of outsider music-clearly they rip off our subculture's aesthetic, yet consider it 'Punk'. Granted, goth branched from punk, yet they make us feel as if we're back in the eighties, when one could not tell the difference between all subcultures, whether its ours, punks, etc.-and yet they feel they have the right to insult our subculture and punk yet they're sympathized and justified because they're apparently a 'GLBT' group...which is ridiculous even if they are then still as a Bisexual and a goth I should freely speak my opinions on them.

I believe that they don't call themselves 'Punk', but refer to themselves as 'Punk Caberet'. It seems a slight distinction to make, however in the same way that 'Goth' music would differ from 'Goth Country & Western' (I beg you great Hecate, please never let me hear anything described as this...) I think that 'Punk' differs from 'Punk Caberet'.
And all of that being said... I really enjoy them. And I don't care if no-one else does. All the more for me. :P

Well I'm not so big on categories and I personally think that a band has to give theirselves a musical category in order for people to be able to understand a bit more what they're all about. Their attitude might be a bit more punk, but then again, not really. I dont know! :P I dont really care if they are more goth or punk either. But I enjoy their music when I am in the mood. Coin-Operated Boy makes me smile.

I don't care if they call themselves cement-hardcore-industrial-punk. Their music suits my fancy.

I have had their Paradise DVD since Valentine's Day this year... my girlfriend bought it for me. I will never get bored of it and have watched it every day except for the last 6 days because I have just bought the NIN Beside You In Time DVD and have been watching that. Although, on Monday morning I did watch Beside You In Time and then Paradise.
I love Monday mornings.

I really do like them a lot. I find a lot of their lyrics are really good and I also find their beats stick. I also really really really love Amanda's eyebrows. So pwetty! *.*

Well, I can't argue about what genre they fall into, but I do like them.
I went to the 'True Colors' festival last week, which is basically a gay pride music tour. The Dresden Dolls are on the tour with them, and I mainly went to see them. They're so much fun live - tons of energy. I loved the show.
My friends and I actually met both of them after the show. They were very friendly, signed our tickets and chatted with us about the concert and how pretty it is in the mountains (where the concert was.) My friend was in total shock of meeting them and is a really big fan. She started to cry and Amanda gave her a big hug. Both Brian and Amanda were very nice to us, very friendly.

As I said, it's a gay pride tour - so we've got Cyndi Lauper, Erasure, Debbie Harry, The Gossip, The Misshapes, and Margret Cho (comedian).
Those are the headliners, and then depending on which shows you catch their guests are Rosie O'Donnell, Rufus Wainwright, Indigo Girls, The Clicks, Jeffree Star, Cazwell, Amanda Lepore, & Sam Harris.
As for prices, I think it really just depends on the venue they play at. If I remember right we only paid $30 per ticket for GA. But then again, I've been seeing some tickets going for $80 and higher.

I give them credit for creating an instantly identifiable visual image, but I can't stand their vocal stylings. Also, their songs tend to go on forever.
Their music is obviously from the heart, but there's nothing particularly memorable about it, as far as my tastes go.

Hey, did someone mention my favorite genre?
And no, I'm not kidding.
As for the Dresden Dolls, I like them quite a lot. Or I did at one point... I haven't listened to their music much recently, but I still enjoy it. For the record, I don't care much for fucking subculture eugenics.

i completely agree with delicate torture. Does it honestly matter what they call themselves? They were on a compilation cd entitled A Dark Cabaret, which I believer to make more sense than punk cabaret.
Why are you so upset that they dont want to be associated with the goth subculture? It's probably more because Amanda Palmer was a punk in her younger years and still has left over distaste from being lumped into the alternative subculture catagory, just as you are upset they want to be lumped into the punk category.
Do I personally consider them punk? No.
Do I dance around and sing at the top of my lungs to their music? Guilty.

I like the Dresden Dolls; I don't care whether they're punk or whatnot. I'd classify them as dark cabaret anyway. I've been humming "Coin- Operated Boy" ever since I first heard it, and that's a good sign in favour of the band, in my opinion.

I like them a lot, though I rarely listen to them for some reason. Seems a lot of people are the same way.
I don't know about "punk cabaret", but Eva O did do a gothic cabaret album that's quite similar, so they might fit into that category. Oh well.

To be honest I really don't like them. Not because they call themselves Punk or are extremely pretentious because thats a whole other load of crap in itself. I agree with maggot and Vyvian on those subjects. I don't like them because of the music. Summed up its "I'm a girl with major problems so I'm going to sing about it like it's cool to". It's all cool if thier fans can relate to that and all and I'm not saying that people shouldn't like them. I'm just saying how I feel.

I hear many indie tards raving over them. I've never actaully listened to their music except for that cover of "The Ghost In You" by The Psychedelic Furs, which I thought was crap. I should probably check out some of their other stuff when I'm very bored and remember to.
