Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

The Goth anthem
The question is simple. What song in your opinion is THE goth anthem and why?

"Bela Lugosi´s Dead", Bauhaus. And that is one point I will not budge on. First recognized goth song, never surpassed.

"Graveyard Mary" by Screams for Tina.
Download it and listen and you'll see why.

Why that is of course!
Don't they just sound like "goth Goth goth goth goth Goth Goth goth goth"?
I agree with Bela Lugosi's Dead.

Just to see the horror on some people's faces, and the joy on other's.

I've been here all the time
This far no sign of doing right
I've always waited for the moment
That you would come through my door
But this brought loneliness so far
I lay my hand onto my heart
Is this a life I want to live?
Is this the dream I had of you?
But this brought loneliness so far
I lay my hand onto my heart
Is this a life I want to live?
Is this the dream I had of you?
The dream I had of you
Now I'm standing here alone
I'm waiting on my own
For something that will fill the emptiness inside
The moment that you're mine
But this is loneliness I know
I lay my hand onto my soul
Is this what life has got to give?
Is this the dream I had of you?
The dream I had of you
But this is loneliness I know
I lay my hand onto my soul
Is this what life has got to give?
Is this the dream,
the dream I had of you?

Special place in the heart for this one. I miss the Manray, I miss the people and the energy and everything that went with it. Open back up, damnit.
The flow of the song caught me up, and the doubt in the lyrics just struck a chord of conviction in me. I knew I was in the right place.

I understand...but nothing is the same anymore. The people I knew that went to the old clubs aren't here anymore and the new people just suck.

I remember having a relatively good time at Ascension one of the last times I was in Baltimore, if you're still in MD this summer we could commiserate. I'm oodles of fun, and completely devoid of suck.

Eh, I fell asleep at Ascension last time I went. Sometimes its busy, a lot of times it's not. The DJs are really good there though and I have some friends there.
Orpheus on Saturday nights is busy, but a lot of the crowd is younger.

Bela Lugosi's Dead is probably THE Goth anthem, but let's not forget about Cities in Dust, A Forest, Lucretia My Reflection, Now I'm Feeling Zombiefied, or Preacher Man.

I was expecting alot of people to say Bela Lugosi's dead. I would also say that this is THE anthem. Simply because it is considered the first gothic rock song by many and it certainly has a strong connection with many gothic themes. Bram Stoker and Dracula, death, and general gloominess glazed over with creepy screechy noises and strong bass. A song cant get much gother than that.

You mean Voltaire?
Where is here!?
I've always wanted to see him live but I never got the chance.

If you get the chance to see him, I highly recommend it.
He is a wonderfully sarcastic fellow.
I'll never forget the grin on his face when I asked him to sign my Hot Topic Frequent Shopper Card. His signature is much more valuable to me than 10% off my next purchase.
