Who Is Your Favorite Author?

Personally I like the Marqui de Sade because he went against the conventions
of his society by writing stories that made people look into the darkness of humanity. He was also a rebel in his own right.

i know is corny but i've been a big fan of 'horror' writer james herbert since i was a kid.
but hollywood always trashes his stories by sugercoating them and adding a happy ending.

but i think that EVERYONE should read i book called

'I, The Devine'

by Rabih Alameddine

it is truly amazing, devestating, heart breaking and absolutly awe inspiring.
one of the few books to make me really stop and think about my own life.
read it.

also you just cant go past Poe as the most bad ass!

James Joyce. Helped to innovate modern literature, pissed a bunch of critics off, wrote in several languages (in a single novel)... That's pretty sweet in my opinion.

there IS a 'favorite author' thread, that's true - but one does not necessarily equate one's favorite author as a bad ass one. i suppose that would lie within one's perception of what a bad ass is.

for example - jack ketchum, my choice, absolutely is a bad ass because he's a brutal horror-fiction writer who also happens to be talented, however he's not my favorite.

if katshin88 doesn't mind my intrusion here - i'd like to suggest that 'bad ass' in this thread be an author one finds or has found to be particularly striking in a way that made him or her as a reader feel something intense at one time or another or perhaps even each time he or she reads that author's work, the criteria not being that said author is necessarily one's favorite.

i think that might be what she was getting at with her initial post without actually outlining it, unless i'm reading it wrong.

Well, you're right on the ball with that one winged_dreams but I was also talking about authors who didn't follow conventions of their own society and people who changed the face of liturature somehow.

Sorry for not outlining that earlier and I do thank you for the intrusion.

i'll also vote for thomas harris as a bad ass - silence of the lambs still ranks as one of the best books i've read. so well written, in fact, there were times i forgot i was reading a book and felt as though i was taking in a police file. perfectly executed.

Well, all I know is that the Marquis de Sade wrote some very disturbing and sexual things. That's why the word sadism is derived from his name. Then again there is always Stephen King and Dean Koontz to bring you disturbing imagery if you want it.

Ok, then I would suggest Marquis de Sade. His books contain sexual deviation, murder etc. The first book I read was 120 Days of Sodom and believe me it's disturbing as hell. If you ever check it out, tell me what you think.

I haven't found it disturbing yet. There are some descriptions of sexual things I would never do but whatever...I'll still read it. And I'll let you know if I ever get disturbed. ^^ Another fun sexual book is Venus in Furs.
