Charles Baudelaire

I didn't quite see a thread about him here before (please redirt me if I'm wrong), but he's obvisiouly remained perhaps my idol (next to Poe and Shelley) for writing. He's actually a bit more of a scholar than he is a writer. His philosphy that differs him from other authors is his sense of eroticism and certain perspectives in life that the majority of the population didn't look at. "The Flowers of Evil" is perhaps one of most brillant collection of poetry I've ever read. He's the reason why France loves Poe to begin with! So, to start this thread, what do you think of his work?

Do you read it in French? I wish I could.

I have two different translations of Flowers of Evil, one where they made it rhyme in English and one that pretty much used free verse. The non-rhyming one was a lot more 'poetic.'

I have heard his name, but I must confess I have never read anything by him (*blushes*). I will go looking for Flowers of Evil tonight at Barnes and Noble.

Thanks for bringing him up, I am looking forward to reading something new to my experience.

He's a great author. Yes, he has the melancholy sensibilites in writing, that are lyrical without the ryhming or traditional format. In fact, an early exposure to his writing was in Paris when I was about two or three, my mother (who loved gothic literature) would tell me the poems as bedtime stories, I learned many words from him. I've even mesmorized some of his work. I suggest his work to anyone.

Always be a poet, even in prose.

Evil is done without effort, naturally, it is the working of fate; good is always the product of an art.

I have cultivated my hysteria with delight and terror. Now I suffer continually from vertigo, and today, 23rd of January, 1862, I have received a singular warning, I have felt the wind of the wing of madness pass over me.

Any chance someone could link me to where I could purchase the "free-form" version of Flowers of Evil?

I've honestly never heard of Charles Baudelaire before but this post has sparked my intrest.

Sure. Find the full text here:

http://baudelaire.litteratura.com/les_fleurs_du_mal.php

or, if that doesn't work, here:

(my apologies if it may come out in French)

"La mort des pauvres" is the highlight of "Les Fleurs du mal" in my opinion.

Oh...my...God.

What a sheltered life I have lived, ignorant of Baudelaire!

I wish I could write like THAT!

(...goes back to reading Flowers of Evil. )

I actually have a quote of his on my signature. His writing, I feel, reflects my personality so much. It is startling, but I feel content nonetheless.

Baudelaire was my favorite poet for years.
My favorites are "Get Drunk," "Hemisphere of Hair," and "The Snake Dance."
