Dutch and I have no idea where my dad comes from. Maybe like... very distant English? Not a clue.

Mostly Italian. Thought there was some English in there but, fortunately, it turns out my mom's side of the family just got stuck in England for a little while on the way to America from Luthiana(Formerly part of USSR, Slavic). Also have a little German, Irish and Scottish in there.

All over the place, but my Family name I understand came from some French aristocrat who took over an English port in the 1500's.

So I'll just say French & Irish to the best of my knowledge.

How can people know so specifically what they are? And what's its use?
I'm Mexican and that's it.

I was wondering something similar. Most of the people who've replied have about 4 different answers. Don't get that really. I go by surnames. My father's surname is Scottish, and my mother's maiden name is Welsh.

I think most people guess by the last names of their grandparents and great grandparents, and with so many grandparents it adds up to a lot of guesses.

I come from a family of historians though, so my heritage has been documented many, many times in all its mundane detail. One interesting thing I've gleaned from it though is that our single convinct ancestor was an Englishman shipped to the colonies for stealing a piece of leather.

But anyway to answer the question, like most Australian mongrels I have at least one ancestor from just about every part of Britain. An outstanding bulk of them, however, are Scottish, and that's the heritage I identify with most.

Well some familys like my own tend to keep track. It's like on my father's mother's side, they've managed to trace it back all the way back to the revolutionary war, though the ancestor who was around back then was fighting against the United States as a Hessian mercenary.

Some of our families haven't been here very long, so country of origin isn't hard to pin down. I'm only 3rd generation on my father's side and like 4th on my mother's. Add that to the fact that recent immigrants at the time, especially Italian and Russian (Though the same holds true for most ethnic groups), tended to stick around others of the same ethnic background, it isn't hard. As for how much of what is in me, that's much tougher. Though I know what backgrounds are more predominate as my paternal grandfather was 100% Italian and both maternal great grandparents were from Luthiana. Well, that only holds if you don't want to get into issues like Germanic overrunning of northern Italy and other similar situations.

Not much use. Is useful in some situations. In some countries, like Italy, it doesn't make a difference where you or your parents were born. So long as no one renounced their Italian citizenship before the next generation was born then the next generation is considered an Italian citizen under Italy's law. So useful if I ever wanted to claim it and get the hell out of dodge.

It can be interesting, but I also get annoyed at people who seem overly proud of their heritage.

That I'm American is all I can reliably tell people.

I'm proud of my heritage, but because my heritage is Mexican. That's it.
But let's take BtS's post.
"German, Portuguese, French, Irish, Scottish, English, Austrian, and Russian."
So many nations. Does he identify with all of them? Does he identify with any of them?
