Tom Waits

He's not "goth," strictly speaking, but he's certainly dark and disturbing. Any fans?

Also, has anyone bought/heard his newest release - Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards - yet? It looks good, but I'm generally hesitant to spend $30+ on a CD set. What do you all think of it?

Why is everyone obsessing about him now?

I, for one, think he's dreadfully boring.
I'd put him right up there with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds for boring artists.

Out of curiosity, to which albums have you listened? I'm not a fan of most of his earlier work - Blue Valentine and The Heart of Saturday Night, to be specific - but I'm honestly at a loss as to how albums like Alice, Blood Money, Mule Variations, and Real Gone could be described as boring.

What I love about Tom Waits is his complete lack of fear or hesitation to try something new, no matter how strange it may seem (circular violin, anyone?). Also, I love the lyrical intensity of his music - especially since his wife began co-writing. "Another Man's Vine," from Blood Money, is one of my favorite songs, and "I'm Still Here," from Alice, is quite possibly one of the saddest songs I know. And even the songs without wonderful lyrics (á la "Kommeniezuspadt" and "Hoist That Rag") have enough bizarre, catchy, and interesting musical elements to make them worth listening to.

I've only heard one song of him but it rawks!
He sings Christmas Sucks with Peter Murphy!
We should make that song our little anthem for this season.

"Be bottle is empty
The sleigh has a flat
The stipper in my bed
Is ugly and fat
The tassles are tangled
And what's worse, my jingle won't jangle"

You know, I think this forum might be better than a music dedicated forum for finding new music, not saying I like it all, but its stuff you dont hear of too often, and thats a good thing! I hate it when I search for music and get top 10 lists.... If EVERYONE searches top 10 lists for music, no other music ends up on the top 1000 lists. Ah well, off to check more music out

Seriously? I've never heard it, but that sounds awesome. Do you know what album it's on?

You might like "Misery's the River of the World," "Don't Go Into the Barn," or "What's He Building in There?".

(Who's your avatar a photo of, by the way? It looks familiar.)

Heh, I don't know the names of any albums; not of Waits, not of Murphy, not of Siouxsie...
If I bought the albums with the music I listen to, I would have no money for anything else.

By the way, my avatar is Tilo Wolff; one of my musical heroes.

I know this is a Tom Waits thread but, for fans of Tom Waits, do check out Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. He is another great dark lyricist that you will probably like.

I share the sentiment, and I'm currently coveting Tilo Wolff's hair.

I really enjoyed "Real Gone" by Waits. It's a really unique, kind of Southern Gothic-blues album. I'd probably give a listen to "Brawlers, Bawlers, and Bastards" before I bought it, though. I found a copy at my local FYE this weekend, but it was about forty bucks.

Real Gone was wonderful! I loved the funky percussion.

The song is "This Holiday Season", and it's on a compilation album called 'The Mother of All Flagpole Christmas Albums'. This is actually an Athens Georgia band, called Porn Orchard, imitating Tom and Peter (VERY well). It's very rare. I've been trying to find one for a few years, and I live close to Athens, where it was originally sold.

Wow, indeed! I would have never guessed they were any other than Tom Waits and Peter Murphy.
Although now I feel like a little kid who has been told the truth about Santa.

I heard him first on "Blue Valentine." I like his voice, and dark tone of the lyrics, but think he has been more successful with his collaborative work.

'Rain Dogs'. Listen to that one and tell me what you think. I'd call it anything but boring. But I *have* heard other Tom Waits albums that were actually boring... his earlier, more conventional ones.

Tom Waits is my favorite artist, and has been for some time.

I'll be getting his new album for Christmas.
