Brick Top: Do you know what "nemesis" means? A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent. Personified in this case by an 'orrible cunt... me.

Bullet Tooth Tony: So, you are obviously the big dick. The men on the side of ya are your balls. There are two types of balls. There are big brave balls, and there are little mincey ****** balls.

Vinny: These are your last words, so make them a prayer.

Bullet Tooth Tony: Now, dicks have drive and clarity of vision, but they are not clever. They smell pussy and they want a piece of the action. And you thought you smelled some good old pussy, and have brought your two small mincey ****** balls along for a good old time. But you've got your parties mangled up. There's no pussy here, just a dose that'll make you wish you were born a woman. Like a prick, you are having second thoughts. You are shrinking, and your two little balls are shrinking with ya. The fact that you've got "Replica" written down the side of your gun. (withdraws his gun) And the fact that I've got "Desert Eagle point five O" written on the side of mine, should precipitate your balls into shrinking, along with your presence. Now... Fuck off.

Still listening to "Snatch" soundtrack

The Girls were one of the original Dirtnap bands. Basically, they played around Seattle with bands like the Briefs and the Spits (and even included members of both bands). They also had a side project, the Warm Jets. Now, all these bands got noticed at this weekly event called Pho-Bang, which was a drag show that had bands play in between acts (a similar thing started up in NY, and birthed Hedwig and the Angry Inch). One of the people that'd go to these shows decided that he wanted to form a label and put out records by all the bands that played Pho-Bang, specifically the Warm Jets. Well, the Jets called it quits by the time the label (Dirtnap Records) formed, but some of the other bands he signed on have been making waves ever since (the Epoxies, the Spits, the Briefs, and more recently, the Hollowpoints). The Girls put out one record, and recently broke up. The song I got (actually, it doesn't have a title, but me and some of the former members just call it "Swoon") was a demo that they made before the break-up, and I promised that I would never release it on the net (it was a demo...a pretty crappy one at that).

Sadly enough, three of my favorite local bands broke up last year-the Girls, Hint Hint, and Cobra High, all of whom were just about to break (fairly) big time. Even sadder, KMFDM and Audioslave still makes records. Just because they're local doesn't mean that they're good.

Oh yeah, I'm listening to "Losing My Edge" by LCD Soundsystem, which I dedicated to "every person who has ever worn black and bought a record" at a goth club.

"Yeah, I'm losing my edge.
I'm losing my edge.
The kids are coming up from behind.
I'm losing my edge.
I'm losing my edge to the kids from France and from London.
But I was there.

I was there in 1968.
I was there at the first Can show in Cologne.

I'm losing my edge to the kids
whose footsteps I hear
when they get on the decks.
I'm losing my edge to the Internet seekers
who can tell me
every member
of every good group from 1962 to 1978.

I'm losing my edge.
To all the kids in Tokyo and Berlin.
I'm losing my edge
to the art-school Brooklynites
in little jackets
and borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered eighties.

But I'm losing my edge.
I'm losing my edge, but I was there.
I was there.
But I was there.

I'm losing my edge.
I can hear the footsteps every night on the decks.
But I was there.
I was there in 1974 at the first Suicide practices in a loft in New York City.
I was working on the organ sounds with much patience.
I was there when Captain Beefheart started up his first band.
I told him, "Don't do it that way. You'll never make a dime."
I was there.
I was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids.
I played it at CBGB's.
Everybody thought I was crazy.
We all know.
I was there.
I've never been wrong.

I used to work in the record store.
I had everything before anyone.
I was there in the Paradise Garage DJ booth with Larry Levan.
I was there in Jamaica during the great sound clashes.
I woke up naked on the beach in Ibiza in 1988.

But I'm losing my edge
to better-looking people,
with better ideas,
and more talent.
And they're actually really, really nice.

I'm losing my edge.

I heard you have a compilation
of every good song ever done by anybody.
Every great song by the Beach Boys.
All the underground hits.
All the Modern Lovers tracks.
I heard you have a vinyl of every Niagra record on German import.
I heard that you have a white label of every seminal Detroit techno hit - 1985, '86, '87.
I heard that you have a CD compilation
of every good '60s cut
and another box set from the '70s.

I hear you're buying a synthesizer and an arpeggiator
and are throwing your computer out the window
because you want to make something real.
You want to make a Yaz record.

I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables.
I hear that you and your band have sold your turntables and bought guitars.

I hear everybody that you know
is more relevant than everybody that I know.

But have you seen my records? This Heat, Pere Ubu, Outsiders, Nation of Ulysses, Mars, The Trojans, The Black Dice, Todd Terry, the Germs, Section 25, Althea and Donna, Sexual Harrassment, a-ha, Pere Ubu, Dorothy Ashby, PIL, the Fania All-Stars, the Bar-Kays, the Human League, the Normal, Lou Reed, Scott Walker, Monks, Niagra, Joy Division, Lower 48, the Association, Sun Ra, Scientists, Royal Trux, 10cc, Eric B. and Rakim, Index, Basic Channel, Soulsonic Force ("just hit me"!), Juan Atkins, David Axelrod, Electric Prunes,

Gil! Scott! Heron!

the Slits, Faust, Mantronix, Pharaoh Sanders and the Fire Engines, the Swans, the Soft Cell, the Sonics, the Sonics, the Sonics, the Sonics."

Hehe, I love the lyrics to "Losing My Edge" - "I'm losing my edge / to the art-school Brooklynites / in little jackets / and borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered eighties". So funny. An amazing document of hipster culture that avoids the pitfalls of humourless elitism even if it's written from that "been there, done that" perspective of an aging scenester. Thanks for supplying the complete thing, some of the bands he mentions are kinda hard to make out out on the record. I admit, I'm sorta like one of those anti-hipsters that's secretly a little sad I didn't grow up in N.Y.

Ok, so now I know a bit more about Dirtnap records! You are a veritable cornucopia of interesting music / movie facts, Loy. Kudos (which I now know is also a chocolate bar).

"Denouncement" from As one aflame laid bare by desire by black tape for a blue girl.

"Take my flesh, leave me with my fallacies and lies.
Take everything I've ever wanted, how can I become that which I am not?
I no longer believe the words I've convinced you of.
and maybe it's worse to remember than to forget
and maybe it's better to desire than to achieve
and maybe it's worse not to taste of forbidden fruit
and maybe it's better to know than to believe
and sometimes it's worse to feel alive than to feel dead
I crumble into successive frames. I over-analyze every thought. I stand before the crowd stripped bare, faced by my inconsistency. I await their judgement in comparison to my ideal. How can I ever be...how can I be everything that I hope to be?"

Jesu - Walk on Water

Justin Broadrick of Godflesh's new band. Hypnotic, drone-y sludge metal with beautiful melodic overtones and desolate clean vocals. Worth checking out if you like Isis and Pelican.
