Being In The Hospital

Hey gang, well, things haven't been going as well as I have planned, and I write this post from Sister Kenny Physical Rehabilitation Hospital in Minneapolis. Let me get you caught up on what happened.

On May 19, I was working on my birthday, about halfway through my shift I was lifting a tire off a truck when I felt a muscle go in my back. I felt tinging in my toes a few minutes later and knew I should go home. So after trying to work the muscle out in mu back and have a good birthday with my family I went to bed.

I woke up at 1 am to have no feeling or movement in my left leg, and I called for my Mom and Dad upstairs. We made the decision to get me to hospital as soon as posible, and off to the ER we went. By the time we got to the ER I couldn't feel or move anything from the waist down on my body. I had an MRI done at about 230 am and found that I had a massive disk herniation between my 4th 5th lower vertibrae in my lower back and I was put into emergency surgery at 530 am.

I woke up at 9 am and the surgery was a success, but the surgeon had found a dural tear in one of my spinal fluid sacks that had to be stitched, so I was put on bed rest for three days, and was not able to move from being flat on my back.

Last Thursday I was transferred from Mercy Hospital to The Sister Kenny Rehab facility in Abott Northwestern Hospital to begin to learn how to walk and move again, and progress is going well. I can walk slowly with the aide of a walker and leg braces, and can transfer from wheelchair and into bed, and have gained back a lot of feeling in my upper legs, but my lower legs and bladder are coming around slower.

My discharge date is June 21, so progress is coming around slowly, but I'll be out in no time!

Sincerely,

Kyle

Hospitals suck. May recovery not be a pain in the ass, and well, good luck, SOD.

SOD, that sucks man. But (if there is a bright side to getting your back buggered like this), it sounds like you and your family handled it as best as could be done. I spent 14 days in the hospital a few years back, and after the surgery the worst thing was not knowing when I was going to get out of there (I didn't know until the last day.) So I'm glad you've got a date for getting out and the prognosis is good.

But admit it, it wasn't a tire. You busted your back being a bit too enthusiastic whilst shaggin' a bird, right? You can tell us ... you're amongst friends!

Wishing you a speedie recover. Have they said anything about what you need to do in the longer term to take care of your back?

There are a bucket of stretches that can be done to strengthen the muscles surrounding the spine to support it, but I'd check with the rehab people first.

Shit, get well soon. Someone in my family has a prolapsed disc and it greatly limits what kind of exercise is safe, but I'm sure someone will advise you.

Thanks everybody! Ben, it was a tire believe me, I'm like the Canadian Army, I never see any action! *harhar*

From what the doctor has said to me by the time I get out I should be able to walk with the aid of a cane for a while and then after a few weeks of outpatient therapy, I should be able to walk on my own, so here's to that!

Wow. Just.. Anyway.
I hope you get better soon mate As far as bad news like this go, I suppose it's good that you have something to aim for instead of being stuck without knowing how or when
Good luck with the recovery

Thanks! I'm getting stronger everyday, and I even got to have acupuncture today for my first time, it was pretty rad.

I always wanted one of those canes that have a sword hidden inside. Oh, and some really cool ones have a compass or a drinking flask hidden in the top!

Holy Moley! I am always the last to learn anything around here. Sorry to hear about your injury man, but I am super glad you seem to be making rapid recovery! I intended to post some well wishes earlier, but every time I see Judas' avatar I get sidetracked and...uh...what were we talking about?

*edit* Do not, DO NOT put "nun tits" in google's image search!

I think I'm scarred for life.

Oh, the nun tits were fabulous. I'm just warning you that some of the pics with dicks were a bit disconcerting ... and by disconcerting I mean "Holy Mother Of GOD!!!"

I know a great website that makes quality swordsticks, as well an antique one I encountered the day that is apparently the UK that has a compass and a sundial inside a close able globe head. They also sell another one that contains a captains telescope AND a compass. Also it has another one that contains a flask inside.

You wont find (legally owned) sword sticks in the UK though because they are illegal there.

I came across it while browsing the Whitby Gothic weekend forums which contained a link to the following website that has a lot of links to high priced antique dealers.

I'm quite good at finding the most wonderful little oddities.

But yeah get yourself a sword stick stormtrooper, and I hope you have a quick recovery.

Happy (extremely) belated birthday and all the best wishes for your recovery! I'd say I would come and visit you if I were closer but in all honesty I don't really like hospitals...good luck on finding an awesome cane, though.
