People's ability to express their disagreement seems to be fairly healthy here already.

How would you suggest that work? Would there be special rules?

I agree with the statement about disgreements. There was something else that I thought we should have in here... what was it? Maybe a section specifically for advice would be a good idea...

Oh yeah, I was thinking that a section for art should be added. We have section for lit and music (I think?), why not have one for art?

My suggestion is that you might want to just start a couple new threads to debate issues you are interested in, outline the guidelines you'd like people involved in the conversation to try to stick to in the intro, and see how that goes. If those sorts of threads are popular and active (and perhaps civil) then a section might potentially be in order.

I'm not fond of the width, or lack there of, of the column. Independent of other web experience, I'd likely have no problem with it, but as I do I find it a bit tedious for responding in the forum. I seem to be in the minority, but I might as well be honest.

The background is definitely an eye-pleaser, however, and the form of the site outside of the boards seems to be perfectly adjusted for what this site is intended to be. As it stands, my only complaint is the column width.

I find it hard to distinguish whether there is an arrow that signifies a new post. Maybe if there is a bit of color added? Red, possibly.

Personally, I think the site is fine.

To me the site layout and what-not doesn't really matter. The people make the forum.

If the people that are here now stay, then the site will always be awesome.

That red sounds like a good idea. There's red in the circles for new posts in the boards, and I agree it would be effective for new thread-posts as well.

Sweet! I love the new look. Especially the moon through the trees I'm looking at. The background could be more moody...Maybe a watermark of the moon and trees...

It seems to me every thread becomes a debate of sorts.

i always thought the "Politics" section was where all the debates took place.

The gay marriage and abortion could technically go under politics, because politicians are debating those issues...

I think the General thread could be a place for debates... After all, it doesn't really specify what it's for, other than "General questions and meet 'n greet" stuff, presumably that doesn't fit under the other places. And couldn't we debate on answers to "general questions?"

:P

On another note...Yes, we have the politics section but the Politics section is just for that, Politics. That means no religious debate, no abortion debate, gay marriage, etc, etc. I have seen some pretty great debates here and would like to see more, seeing that we are a talented group of people.

Also, most of the debates take place in the Whining or General thread (as far as I know) and those really aren't the places for them as far as I am concerned.
Debating and the fine art of evisceration is the reason the Politics forum was created. The title of the forum could easily be modified to read Politics and Debates.

Here's the problem though.

Debates+Gnet=Bloody Entrail Filled Massacre!!

You can poke around in several of the touchier thread topics and see what I mean.

You name it, we have debated it the last few years. We have lost more than one long-time member because of some of the debates we have had here at Gothic.

Yes, most people play nice. However, some of these topics hit too friggin close to home for some of us, to remain impartial. Or at the very least, mellow about said topic.

Then before you know it, good friends are sworn enemies, there's blood everywhere and long-time members are too pissed off to return to the site.

Hence our Admins comment on civility.

Plus there are some topics we have found, that are just too delicate to debate impartially. It's just not possible when you have this many strong, passionate people on the same forum.

I certainly have little objection to the creation of threads in Politics on issues that the members feel need debating.

Just bear in mind, you are throwing a Lit Matchbook into a case of TNT when you do it.

It can and will get ugly.. Very, very ugly..

Sure the Moderator's 'moderate' during these Public Eviscerations, but even we cannot be 100% impartial, 100% of the time. Plus there is only so much we can do effectively to restore balance and order to the Gnet force.. ( Yeah, I'm a total geek I know )

The two that STILL stand out in my mind, were the 'Columbine Anniversary' thread and the "Should ********** be allowed to publish 'How To' books thread."

We lost long time members in both oral annihilations..

Both threads got extremely hateful, hurtful and flat fucking out of control..

But just so you know, that was really the intent of the Politics forum in the first place.

It's somewhere to debate the 'Politics' of a particular issue.

It was not meant to be specific to the 'Politics' of Government, solely.

Whatever issues people want to discuss the merits or negatives on, that's the place to do it here.

I don't know how helpful any of this is for you, but I thought it might be useful to understand some of the history of the Gnet Debate Massacres.

I'll keep the Blood Mops handy, either way..

On the whole it looks much cleaner. Perhaps the background image could be darkened? A simple black flood fill at 20% opacity so it doesn't distract too much? Just so the eye, being a lazy organ, is drawn towards the centre of the page...

I still gotta agree with dark angel. The site looks good, but the background, though pretty, is a bit of a distraction.

as always, reviving the dead is a time honored tradition here.

I also haven't been here much lately, in fact it was an E-Mail from the site that sort reminded me of the site.

From what I see, the site looks great, and it does move faster than it did when I was last here.

Um... you like me to be completely honest? Jesus, that's a tall order... Well seeing as I'm new round here, I have nothing to compare it to; other than it's very black, so bloody black i can't find the damn cursor - kinda explains why I've not made many posts. From a designer's point of view there are some minor glitches but since your the web-master, I'll let you find them and sort'em out, you'll learn so much from the experience.^^

On the whole it's good looking site, very promising, though it would be nice to allow users with larger displays to expand the page widthwise...
