Direct definitions of what's goth and what's not fail, but Gothic L.olita is not Goth.
It's as goth as American Gothic is goth.

They're not exactly misnamed. They use the old definition of gothic, not the subculture one. Just like gothic literature and the word gothic in American Gothic.
They just use it to mean "oh look I'm so cute being so dark and sexually repressive"

There is a short part on the relationship between goth and gothic l.olita written from a more japanese perspective in the wikipedia article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_l.olita (take out the full stop).

As for the use of the word otaku, It's always bugged me aswell. My previous post is the fist and only time I've ever used it to describe myself, I think I did it because I noticed that most people here seem to be fairly casual anime fans. I on the other hand have over 100 Gig of fansubs on my hard drive, three shelves of anime DVDs and my manga has outgrown their shelves to the point where I just have to pile them on top of each other, if anyone can have a derogotory anime related term applied to them it's me.

Kamui from CLAMP's X, if I had to choose.

Or really, almost any of the characters in that one.

If you're talking Gothic L.o.l.i.t.a., however, then that might be a bit tougher....

... I'd think Alucard would be paramount, but eh. Whatever.

Not a gigantic fan of anime, and I chuckled whenever I read "Sephiroth." He's more emo than anything.

Still kind of wondering why so many people adore anime, and then miss graphic novels like Hack/Slash. You'd think that if anything, Cassie Hack would have a shrine of Goth-dom before Sephiroth would.

I love Alucard.

Ryuk from Deathnote, though...

I used to like anime. But all the anime I was introduced to had the same theme, which screwed me in the head a bit. Guy has to save the world (or something to that affect) guy finds annoying high pitched voiced girl who follows him around like a puppy, guy hates girl. Are they all like that?

And I've never stayed around to witness the ending...

I'm not much of an anime person, I grew up with Miyazaki films and continue to love them, but there is not anything really gothic about those. Howl's Moving Castle and Castle in the Sky are rather steampunky though, and possibly Porco Rosso.
From what I've heard of Death Note it sounds like it would have gothic characters, but I haven't seen it so I won't talk any more

D from Vampire Hunter D would be the closest I can think of, but I somehow don't think he would ride his hellish horse while listening to "Bela Lugosi's Dead"

There are a lot of anime characters out there that are very Goth, but the most Goth is Sesshomaru. He is one hot ball of wolf with those poison claws.

If I would choose a character from appearance alone, I'd say Real Mayer from Ergo Proxy. She just has the goth look about her.

Also, although it's not a true manga in the Japanese sense, Megatokyo's Tohya Miho is pretty goth. Largo refers to her as the "Queen of the Undead".

Oh yes, and the evil sister from "X - The Movie". Sorry, can't remember her name, but I found her kinda hot in a gothy sort of way

Her name is Kanoe. =3

As far as goth-ish anime characters go, I'd have to throw my vote in for Hanajima Saki from the otherwise saccharine Fruits Basket.
