I want the sides shaved shorter, but not completely shaved off. I hate having a job where they give a shit, I'm not used to it, but I guess I care more about making that money, than I do about "looking cool"

I've never been able to make mine look good when it's down. I've seen it look alright on other people but it's still obvious the sides are shaved short/off so I don't know if that would be suitable for your job.

I always planned on cutting my hawk when I want to get a job.

Haunted managed to pull it off, but his was long enough that he could split it and it just looked like he had really thin jaw length hair.

I've had this for a few months now, so it's taller.

Only one of the sides is shaved; is there a particular name for that? I'm not quite sure what to call it, but I refuse to call my hair a mohawk.

I need to get a more recent pic, its a lot longer now.

I've been considering doing this hairstyle for some time now, I just need some pointers I'm not sure about... Right now my hair is very long/thick, down to my mid-back (yes im a guy), do i need to cut it shoulder length at least + get it layered? I already have the sides underneath shaved and it's virtually un-noticable.

I've researched this style a lot and tried it myself as is, I don't have the arm length to stretch it that high and I always end up with a couple dreadlocks afterwards ><

so i just cut my hair short for the first time, and i gotta say, its weird. ive always rocked the long hair. and now that i had it fixed ive been playing around with it. i decided to make it stand on end tonight, and if i do say so myself, i think there could be some real potential there. now, its not a mohawk, but when its up it could definitely be a 'hawks cousin or something. but i couldnt get that patch of hair where the top meets the back to cooperate. it kept separating, and didnt want to mesh. made it look like i had a bald spot on the crown of my head or something equally not ok like that, and i assure you, no such thing exists. anyways, heres where i turn to the experts (you guys) for help. so what do i do? i dont really have the money to be spending on a lot of stuff. i do have a hair wax/pomade type thing i use normally to mildly mess my hair up, but tonight i just used a bar of soap so it would stick. anybody got some help for the newbie?

Wasn't sure about the whole "face shape" thing people seem to worry about so much. I have yet to see a hawk not really "work" on somebody. I just went with it and I'm satisfied with it. Still contemplating shaving sides, but still use the burns for side-locks.

Shaved sides now, at least to the ears. Its enough to have the shaved look but not enough done to make it obvious and be weird looking when down with a center part.

i recently shaved mine off and am now mourning the loss of my giant hair. so i have a teeny tiny baby hawk that isnt even long enough to put up, so i'll show off what my hair /did/ look like.

and when it was down-

i miss my hair like mad currently. i cant wait until its long enough to put back up.

I could never make my hawk look good when it was down. I had my hair cut short in the last couple of weeks too.

Some tips

Hey all , hows it going. I've been reading up on this thread a little, and I've got a few questions maybe you could help me with.
Well, I started death hawking my hair about 7 months ago and I've run into a few problems. First and foremost I can't get the side-burn thingies right. They always look ridiculous, and never long enough. I've let my hair grow out a bit, and I'm about to try it again so hopefully I get it this time. Any pointers?
Also, how often do you guys end up washing your hair?
It seems like a real hassle to wash, since mine has really started dreading up from the teasing/hairspray and sleeping on it. Which is another thing I wanted to ask. How do I prevent the dreading, or should I at all?

Thanks,
R

Ewww dreading is nasty, you can't clean that shit, also if you ever want to not have dreads then you will have to cut them off.

Washing shouldn't be a problem, just get the knots out with conditioner and a wide toothed comb, work the conditioner into wet hair and just go at it from the tips and work your way up to the scalp. It will take a little bit of time depending on the length of your hair but once you get used to it you should be able to take it down and wash it in under 10 minutes. Washing your hair weekly is perfectly fine as long as you are still showering regularly (get a shower cap if you don't want to get it wet), but there is nothing wrong with washing more frequently.

Fyi I've never actually had a hawk, just a really big head of hair but the basics should be the same.

This is a deal breaker for me, Solumina.

Anyway, you CAN comb them out, you just need the patience of a saint. You can buy a kit for it.

I guess I should have phrased my post a little differently, if you actively dread your hair with care and control that is different than your aqua-netted and teased to hell hair forming dreads on its own, much like with waxes, the hairspray can cause some serious damage to your hair while it sits in there.
