Truly sorry about that mess. It was a pretty epic onslaught, but I think we've managed to clean it out, for the most part. A few may still pop up in the next day or so, but we'll try to be on top of it.

So, are you going to appoint a moderator amongst the trusted members so we have someone who can ban spambots when you are not around?

Ideally, yes, but I wish the history of trying that out hadn't consistently gone poorly. So, realistically, it's hard to say. We should probably try it out again and then deal with the disappointment when it goes badly again, but it's hard to make that commitment. I am truly sorry they got through and it went on unchecked for several days though. I do very much appreciate the people here who flagged so many posts with infractions. That did make it easier to catch the stray posts that were missed in the more general sweeps. We will see what kind of strategy we can improve in the spam bot arms race.

Well, Acharis has shown interest in taking on such a role, and I doubt she'd misuse any priveleges given. It is up to you of course, but I believe it could also relieve some of the stress on you whenever something like this happens

Sure didn't take long for a spam post to show up after all that down time, hopefully that isn't a sign of things to come.

Eep! I only offered as I do it on another board format. It might be impractical to mod me alone because IP bans may be needed for one person to control this level of spam, and that permission would give me access to host files where I could accidentally fuck shit up.

Happy to help, but is it possible to give a number of us spam deletion capabilities without serious permissions so we don't get flooded?

Like I mentioned, a few may still pop up now that we've opened things up again. There were a LOT of accounts created, many of which still have 0 posts, and we didn't want to just ban anyone who registered in the last week. I bounced a lot of the obvious ones, but there may still be a few to weed out.

Indeed. We are looking at some new strategies, but there were in the neighborhood of eighty to a hundred thousand bad posts made in just a few days, all with new registrations that were trained to get through the custom human verification questions. That's not something we expect the average moderator to be able to handle efficiently.

Too true. The owner of my site ended up making it so I have to approve join requests. (Something went wrong with my permissions, but at least it stopped the spam. You might have better luck.)

Before that I was trying to get rid of the threads with the prune function, but it wasn't working for me.

There's also this which I would have incorporated into the site if I could.

We actually do use that currently here, and although you don't really see how effective it is when it's working, occasionally things do still get through.

(weird, it seems to have been disabled, this might explain a thing or two.)

Oh yeah. The API has been disabled by the site due to the feature being abused by users.

Jeez, one of the forums I post most to has a fifth the members as this one but has like 10 moderators and five admins to handle this kind of thing specifically. As you can imagine, spammers don't even get the chance to post on there, let alone stick around and make multiple posts. Any chance an addition of staff could be implemented to deal with the spammers and such?

Having moderators didn't seem to work here mate, we've got to count on the Admin to eventually sort shit out, but I don't think that's in the near future.

Also, every single spamwave has been met with at least one of us asking to have a moderator appointed. Judging by the lack of moderators, I am assuming that it's never going to happen.
