...better yet, climb atop the Dome with a 7magnum and start picking off those running around with AK's shooting at the fucking helicopters.

Is it true they had to release a local jail to keep the inmates from drowning, and it's those guys who are pulling the stunts like trying to hijack ambulances?

Those thugs, regardless of how shitty conditions are, are having a grand ol' time, to the point they are firing on rescue efforts to keep all that from ending?!? Is that one of those "Better to rule in hell..." type scenerios?

I am so miserable at work I am seriously debating signing up at the local Red Cross to be flown down and living off my savings til I find another job. I'm with you on that, tekajo.

People can be so horrible. You should be trying to help each other. Not robbing people, trying to shot them, or **** anyone. This has been a tramautic occasion so don't make it worse by being a dick. *grumbles*

Well, at least they're covering real news instead of that Natalee Holloway bullshit now.

I heards this morning on the radio that 500 soldiers from Iraq had been sent in with orders to shoot to kill on site any looters, robbers or rapists.

I also heard that the governor calls the situation a disaster and that someone is shooting at the helicopters trying to rescue people from the dome....

Bodies are reportedly floating around on the water.

My dear God, how could this happen there of all places? I haven't seen any pictures or images other than the ones posted on this site, but the news reports alone make the whole place sound post-apocaliptic.....

Are these things really going on?

Yes, they are..

And much much worse..

New Orleans has become Hell on Earth, and all we can do is sit here and watch..

There really are no words...

Mael, as EPS stated...all of that is true.

To me what is worse is that...that element that NOLA has harbored all these years in the wards (isnt NOLA murder capital?) are now displaced. They are going to end up somewhere. Most likely to Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, and Alexandria.

Alot of people say how beautiful New Orleans is and such....yes, the Garden District is nice...Vieuxe Carre is a little shady but it's supposed to be...then you have the Third World parts. i'll be honest, NOLA scared the fuck out of me a long time ago and i'm not easily scared.

Now those pissed off gangsters that lost hundreds of thousands of dollars of coke, meth, crack, and weed are roaming around the streets. Along with the old prisoners.

Soon they'll be out of the confines of the swamps. i suspect in the coming months one will see the crime rates in other louisiana cities rise.

what is this "five minute edit" horseshit? then it takes away the edit button? fuck you five minute edit.

what i was going to add to my previous post is that on another thread i mentioned that i'll be helping feed some refugees today at my school...about 500. i just heard on the local radio news that in the next few days it is confirmed that 2000+ people will be arriving in our parish.
that is all.
fucking five minute edit...horseshit i tell you.

My previous post on this thread was typed when I got to work at 8am, it's now about 5:30pm here.

What's up?

any significant updates?

I don't want to bitch about the US specifically on this thread, but many of us outside the american continent are trying to keep up to date, although we get mostly the reports that concern us directly, like 60% of american grain exports being lost, about 26% of the US' crude and natural gas and a staggering 49 BILLION $US of transit goods being lost.... and the real possibility that this event will inhibit the recovery of the US (and subsequently world) economy for at least the next 6 months.

It took Bush 3 days to personally address the issue of the United States worst ever natural disaster in recorded history..... Soryy, I said I wasn't gonna bitch, but still...

New Orleans held a quarter of the total amount of coffee consumed in the US (about 100 THOUSAND TONS, so expect an inflation on coffee prices everywhere.

The price of lumber (for reconstruction) is already on the rise. Accenture's supply specialist Al deLattre said: New Orleans is the Aorta (main artery) of the american economy (even though Mississipi is the US' poorest state).

The Mississipi delta has sunk 90cms in the last 100yrs and it's not expected to slow down now.

Shit....

Move it to, and keep it in the Politics Section. Anything resembling this from ANYBODY will be moved there by ME. So if anyone has a political hair up their ass, regardless of your side, you might as well start a thread over there, away from those who want updates on this terrible tragedy and what they can do to help.

Someone asked somewhere which countries have pledged relief for the hurricane victims..

By Friday, offers had been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, New Zealand, Guatemala, Paraguay, Belgium, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Italy, Guyana, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Austria, Lithuania, Spain, Dominica, Norway, Cuba and Bahamas.

I am still more than a bit stunned that both Venezuela AND Cuba have offered aid, despite of their differences with the U.S.

My grudging thanks to both countries..

Day Five of this nightmare, tens of thousands are still trapped and dying in New Orleans..

The National Guard started to arrive TODAY..

Five fucking days later..

I have called everyone from the White House, to the NAACP..

I still stand by my earlier assertion, that if these were thousands of upper class people from the Suburbs, instead of thousands of people from the Wards in NOLA, response would have been IMMEDIATE!!

These people have been treated like fucking animals. There are gang rapes and murders taking place in the Superdome, with not a National Guard member in site for TWO DAYS!!

There is shit and piss and urine, a foot deep in there, and once people entered this hell hole, they weren't allowed to leave. But NO ONE was in there making these people safe, from the kind of people that are taking advantage of this nightmare..

Teka is right, NOLA is scary, and some really scary people live and do ' business ' there.. However there are Tens of THOUSANDS more that are merely deperately poor, and they are being treated with less regard than people treat their own pets..

I am just stunned..

I thought we as a nation had come so much farther than we apparently have. I have watched people, young and old, die in plain sight of emeregency officials, without aid.

I still feel so helpless, and Mael is also correct in saying that this disaster will cause ripples in the Global economy that will be felt around the world..

But right now, NOW people need help..

Entire hospitals full of patients and doctors and nurses are trapped with the critically ill, trying to hold the looters back until someone comes to help rescue them.

They have received NO assistance, and no one is doing SHIT!!

I'm watching the news now, and the reporter speaking just approached several cops standing near them, and informed them about a woman who appeared to be dying, laying in the gutter. These motherfuckers just shrugged their shoulders, and said " Sorry, can't help ya.."

How can this be happening??

"Git R Done". god i hate those t-shirts.

we delivered food to the various churches that have been set up as shelters all day today. i've never seen so many appreciative faces. i talked to a few families from new orleans. we didnt talk about what's been going on down there, just friendly chatting. It was a bit hard to keep the tears back, their demeanor was so upbeat, i couldnt though keep it from my mind that they have nothing left in new orleans. It's a pretty good chance that most will settle here in this area if they can find jobs.

i can't watch the news anymore. i'm going out tonight, drink a few crown and cokes, relax and prepare for tuesday when we start planning on repeating this day very very soon.

For anyone that doesn't want to read about Katrina, dont click on the fucking link. Go on with your life.

And I just heard on the radio there is already almost 3000 credit card "phishing" sites set up under the guise of accepting donations for this tragedy.

Not to mention I was reminded in a rather upsetting way that Poppy Z. Brite is down there (woed is she got out in time to Mississippi) so add THAT to all of this...

Not a word yet..

Sob..

99% percent of the phone service is down in the area. I tried to call every hospital in Metairie and the hospitals in Downtown today, to try and find out if they were there, and only got through for just a second to one hospital.

The woman that answered the phone said they had been barricaded in the hospital for five days, and NO ONE had been there to help them escape and that many people were dead or dying..

I didn't know what to say to her..

I told her help was coming, and that I would do my best to relay her message to the proper authorities, but I don't even know who else to call..

I just cant comprehend that this is actually happening, here in our United States of America..

Well, I feel guilty. I live in a flood zone for the love of God, and fate has spared my belongings and my family all these times. I can still recall that huge flood which took over Houston about four years ago. Out of all the areas mine was spared! I obviously don’t live terribly far from New Orleans and all the other cities that are victims. I pitied myself then Katrina struck a city that was once paradise. All these people have lost everything and many of them have died with their last shred of dignity.

There's always a new crisis and innocent people to mourn with the tsunami and now this. It digressed my mentality to become irrational. What is the point in putting forth effort to protect the earth? Recycling, preventing air pollution, picking up trash, saving water, ugh!
Why? What has Mother Nature ever done for us?

About fifty students and more to come are trying to enroll at my already overcrowded school. This poor kid just enrolled yesterday and he’s in my U.S. History class. I really feel bad. But he’s lucky to stay with relatives to take care of him. I’m going to bring donations when I get back on Tuesday.

Well, cell phone service is almost 100% gone in Baton Rouge and all points east of it. Towers are down; regular home phone service doesn't allow long distance connections right now - but at least people can call in.

One of the major oil storage facilities around New Orleans exploded, creating a gas shortage in Baton Rouge. Most stations are out completely, and at least half of those that aren't, demand prepayment in cash only for gas - or so I've found. I know other places have higher gas, but when gas jumped from $2.45 to $3.38 a gallon overnight, I nearly fainted.

There are so many rumors floating around of evacuees causing crime here that even the news is having a difficult time separating fact from fiction. They don't even bother reporting most of them anymore. You simply hear about them from "a friend who heard it from someone on the radio." I know people are worried about crime here, especially since we were the first stop for evacuation, and now we're the most populous city in the state.

On a positive personal note, I have now heard from all friends and family who were still in the New Orleans area: all are safe. Praise the gods for that.
