Favorite Horror

In the spirit of halloween, what is(are) you favorite horror movie(s)? My favorite of all time has to be Day of The Dead, of course. Romero is the greatest horror genius if our time.

What are you favorites?

I'm a big fan of some of those weirdly shot films from the 80's and 90's, particularly the Hellraiser series. Did anyone catch the reanimation scene from Hellraiser, when Frank starts to reform out of the spilled blood from his brothers' cut hand? Those effects were amazing, even by some of today's standards. The bone and muscle-tissue reforming, the blood and organs reappearing...that was one of the most amazing regeneration scenes I've seen. Of course, I love all zombie flicks, and Romero has the monopoly on the best. I just watched Land of the Dead, and I was a little disappointed in how commercial it seemed, but they can't all be classics.

Dawn of the Dead is just awesome, and Night of the Living Dead is a wonderful piece of nihilistic cinema. Audition makes the list for sheer nerve wracking suspense and horror.

!

Carnival of Souls, indeed! I have that and 3 other older horror films on DVD that my dad got at Meijer for like five bucks. That movie is so creepy, with a sense that the main character will never escape the unknown fate she seems destined for. Plus the creepy organ music. Generally I think it's kind of cheap to build suspense with music, but it adds to the atmosphere of the film. I think my problem with primarily using score to set the mood is that what's on screen often relies completely on the music and an occasional loud cue or noise to shock the viewer. Though, if the score is well done it becomes intertwined with the action on screen and can be so much more effective than the film alone, so it's really something to be judged on a case-to-case basis.

Has anybody here seen The Brain that Wouldn't Die? And House on Haunted Hill with Vincent Price. That movie will always have a special place in my heart.

Ginger Snaps was so fucking sad. I kind of knew toward the end that it had to happen but it was still very dispiriting.

Random thing I feel like adding: I know Lucio Fulci is lauded by many fans but I don't think he was that great a director. He was good at creating atmosphere but he ripped off a lot of stuff from other directors. I thought The House by the Cemetery was better than The Beyond. The zombie scene in The Beyond was just completely lame and unscary.

Ripping off and Borrowing are two different Things though..... I think his Borrowing was tolerable.... He could have done something instead of that, but sometimes We don't realize things like that till they are already done and can't be reversed....

Well everyone is influenced by what they see and hear, it's just that on top of that in his work it was horribly conspicuous that he was ripping off another director.

I mean... I'd have to go back and watch all those films again to hold an agrumentative standing on this... cuz I barely remember Zombie....

I'm more or less impressed that someone else knew who Lucio Fulci was... I've even asked local film critics who didn't even know...

I love having a Hollywood Video near me. They have lots of foreign and obscure films.

Phantom of the Opera, Frankenstein (Spelling?), Carrie, Omen (the first one) wasn't that bad, Children of the Corn (the first one), Sleepy Hollow, and I'm sure there are more but I'm having a brain fart.
