I'll be getting a USMC bag that I bought off of ebay for my school bag soonish. Gonna patch and badge it up. Should end up not too bad.

Cicero: I've been wanting to ask for a while, how the hell do you manage to get your bones so perfect? Whenever I go walking I find a shitload of old bones, sometimes fresh but they always seem to go so brittle and begin to crack within a day or so.

Most of the bones I use are thankfully prepared by other people, usually professionals using dermestid beetles and/or maceration, neither of which cause any damage to bones. It's a service I pay money for though.

The thing about bone tissue is it's really easily fucked by any extremes in temperature or humidity. In most parts of Australia the problem is the dryness and excessive sun exposure that makes the bones brittle.

The best way to get 'perfect' bones from the wild is to either get them off the beach (where carrion feeders pick the bones clean extremely fast, before the elements can get to them), or get them seriously fresh. By that I mean at least partly fleshed and recently dead.
From there the best course of action would be to cut away as much flesh as possible then stick them in a jar of water for a few weeks until bacteria clean them for you, in a process called maceration. All you have to do is replace the fetid flesh soup with fresh water once every few days/weeks until the water remains clear and the process is over.
It takes ages and the smell will probably make you sick, but it's the easiest way to clean bones and keep them strong. Just stick the jar somewhere warm but FAR FAR, AWAY from any place you plan on hanging around in. After the maceration is complete you can whiten the bones with hydrogen peroxide - NEVER use bleach, it does what the sun and dryness do x1,000.

I hope that covers everything you need to know!

When I was in Cornwall, I saw a dead adult seal on the beach. I looked up the skeleton, and then wished that I'd nabbed it. Then I looked up the average weight of an adult seal and promptly changed my mind.

Jesus, you're like an encyclopedia. That was a lot more than I was expecting.
Just one final thing, say I were to leave the jar in the sun would it do anything to the bone?

EDIT: I was actually thinking of taking a sort of scalpel blade whenever I go for a walk to separate what I want from dead rabbits before my dog gets to them.

Dead seals are awesome. The best I found was a near-whole seal skeleton Bat Brains and I dug up a few summers ago, ended up with fuckloads of massive ribs and vertebrae that make perfect garden ornaments. Also got a mummified flipper off a baby seal last year, then macerated it for the 'toe' bones. The great thing about large animals like seals is they usually stay put on the beach, so you can go back to them a few weeks after they wash up to get to the good stuff minus the smell and weight (provided you're near their location that long).

When it comes to bones I can't help but blabber on incessantly, haha. And I don't want anyone making the same mistakes I did and ruining perfectly good calcified tissue.

Leaving the jar in the sun should be fine since the bones are in water. I left my penguin bones out in the Black Saturday heatwave and they turned out lovely.

Good idea with the scalpel. As long as you're not grossed out by it butcher-away!

Yeah, using undiluted bleach for several days is not a good idea. It didn't matter too much for me because I was just wondering what they were from as the bones came from the garden, but even the lightest touch made bits flake off.

Their hollowness equates to brittleness, but I think a good hat band could be fashioned, as well as necklaces or earrings.

That would be cool. I waould advise dipping it in some sort of metal, so as not to spread bacteria or other nasties. Plus, the metal would help keep it together.

That completely defeats the point of it being bone and the perfect size...

I've made chicken bone necklaces and a belt. They're well sized for those sorts of things, but the marrow in the middle takes ages to rot away. My cats still love to munch on them even after I've macerated them for months. Totally destroyed half of my belt =/

And Malice - For an awesomely authentic septum bone you need to get your hands on some bat bones! It's what the Papua New Guinean tribes use (how fucking deathrock is that?).

Yep, their spindly little digits are just the right size.

You'll have to find yourself some dead bats... Cave exploration?

Took it before I ironed that bit on it so it looks odd. Best photo I've got.

i just launched a bunch of jewelry i made by doing little illustrations of stuff like octopus and robots on pieces of polymer clay. (pics in my etsy store)

i just got a pasta machine to help condition harder polymer clays and want to do little figures - i have a day of the dead project in mind.

I'm really enjoying reading about the bones. I have next to me in a little box some carcasses I couldn't pass up - lizard and frog as well as a bird skull. I'm not sure what I'm doing with them but they are like wee treasures to me. I also have been collecting bones from when my boyfriend orders bbq ribs. Again, not sure what will come of them but I'm leaning towards an adornment for the hair.

What about the farmers who shoot fruit bats because they think that they are destroying their crops? : (

You have a nice rack as well as eyes/fringe.
The shirt is also good.

And about the bat bones...
Would they turn up as big as 6mm?
