How, in this day and age, does it so happen that my mister and I have to sever a friendship because I'm not completely white?

One of his friends came over during the weekend. While hubby was playing a computer game in which Spanish is spoken, the 'friend' made some dumbass comment about Mexicans. He was told that not only were the characters Spanish (a lot different from Mexican) but also that my stepfather is Mexican, so tread lightly.

Anyways, the mr talked to him at work, and told him to watch himself. If he wanted to have us as his friends and come over to our house, then he would do good not to make comments on my family's and my ethnicity (I am half Cuban). Would you believe this asshole said that he'd say whatever he wanted, and would do it even more to hurt my feelings?

What the hell is going on when shit like this can happen? I mean, the kid is from Southern California, it's not like he's never been exposed to various cultures. We even got along great - except for the fact that he assumed since we were white like him that we would think rascist jokes are funny. How do people go through life like this?

I know what you mean. I get confused for white a lot since I don't have an accent and I don't look Mexican until I point it out.

Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy a good Mexican joke anytime, even if it's my white friends making it, as long as it truly is funny, not over-the-top offensive, and they know me well enough to know that I know their intent bears no ill will.

I do love watching the stupid white people shove both their feet and their legs into their mouths once they find out I'm not white like them... very entertaining.

I should add that I have no problem with any race including white. I just hate ignorant people regardless of their color or gender or sexual preference. This isn't meant as a slam on anyone who is considered white. The phrase "stupid white people" was meant as just that, the STUPID ones, but that doesn't limit it to just people who are white either.

It's kinda strange to see the term "white people". Where i live we're all either of Spanish and/or Native American descent.

i've lived in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas so it's safe to say i have to come across anyone that made racist remarks about my brownness.

How do people like that kid go through life? Closet racism. He only spews his shit around people that he thinks are like "him". Shit on the little twerp.

It's not anything new to me, but I just do not understand how someone can go through life like this, as a person that has friends of many different ethnicities and get pissed off when they politely ask you not to make rascist comments.

This guy is in the military, and apparently, he also sometimes N-bombs. He isn't some backwoods redneck, he's a regular old So-Cal kid.

Hasn't he ever gotten his ass kicked? Doesn't it get old hurting people's feelings? How can you go so long being a closet rascist without realizing that you are holding negative, hurtful, and incorrect views on people that you have befriended?

I think it's a natural human instinct to assume certain things about people from the way they look. It's also natural, I think, for some people who understand certain boundaries to poke fun at race sterotypes or enjoy humor between themselves.

But, if you aren't sure if certain jokes are okay, you should ask. If you say something offensive, apologize.

I just don't get it - how hard can it fucking be?

One of my most memorable racist memories, was when I went to the Beaux Rivage Casino in Biloxi, MS.

I was eating in the restaurant, and making casual conversation with our waitress.

As she's pouring a refill of my coffee, she looks at me and says;

" Biloxi would be a great place to live, if it wasn't for all of the N****R'S. "

I was floored. I barely managed to pick up my jaw long enough to look at her and say;

" I Bet the Black people say; " Biloxi would be a great place to live if it wasn't for all of the Racist White Trash.."

She opened and closer her mouth a few times, like a fish gasping for air, and then stormed off. I finished my breakfast and called the manager over to my table, and let him know how LITTLE I appreciated the assumption from HIS waitress that I was a racist. And how OFFENSIVE I found the word "N****R". '

He made her come back and apologize to me, which made her very very very unhappy. Then I got my breakfast for free.

But somehow that victory still seemed hollow. People really do think like that..

I deal with similiar things all of the time, because of my sons heritage. I also loathe it when acquaintances make jokes about Spanish people, and assume that I will find them amusing. Like Julia said, it's one thing if they are close friends, and the jokes are in good taste. But when it's someone I DON'T know well, and the jokes are highly offensive, I get pretty fucking pissed off.

God HELP the next person who calls my son a Beaner or a Wetback..

But I'll be sure to send you guys Postcards from Jail.

A big part of it is how they are raised. I'm from a very small town in Newfoundland, everybody there is white. I remember in grade one or two when they were trying to teach us about tolerance, a guy piped up about how Chinese people suck becaue his dad told him so. I've heard very little kids use racists slurs. One of my childhood friends is now a skinhead (yikes). It didn't get better until we got sent to a bigger school in another town, where there were lots of people from different ethnic backgrounds, and even then it was still pretty bad. Now that I think of it, only a few people from my hometown mingled with them at all.

A couple of years ago we had to read a book called Random Passage, which was about European settler that came to Newfoundland. I got upset when they killed a Beothuk, which were the natives that lived here. The Beothuks were wiped out by settlers, there are non today. I was talking about this with a friend of mine, and he said it was probably better that way so we don't have to take care of them, and all they would do is sniff gas. I lost a lot of respect for him that day.

There are very few people that I make racist jokes with, but they are people I know well and know that I'm only ribbing them.I know a few Mexicans, Muslims, and even a real African. I don't understand how people can live in a society and not get along equally.

I've never understood how people can think that someone else is 'less than' themselves just because of skin color.

EPS, I'm sorry that you've had to hear those words said about your son. As a mother it must have been heart-breaking.

It's ironic that this topic came up today in the early morning.

Today I went to a mechanic with my friend who was getting work done on her truck, just to keep her company you know?

Some mechanic there was speaking to the assistant (an obvious Latina) and he started asking question about a celica he was working on. She asked him if he had the name of the owner of the truck. He said he'd only gotten the address but that he wouldn't have bothered to get his name even if he'd thought of it because "he was Oriental. You know how Orientals have names like this *hands spread as wide as they could get* big and impossible to say right anyway"

Moron, first of all, it just showed his IQ level. Most Asian-Americans that I have met have one syllable names that sound just like they're spelled. Second, we were customers. One would think that he wouldn't talk like that in front of customers just for curtesy's sake.

I just said something to him about the whole one syllable thing and he shut up but DAMN!

My bugbear: Bad HTML. HTML is a markup language that allows the user to structure documents. Applied correctly, it ensures logical layout and a good, solid, readable document. The machines reading it know exactly which bits are emphasised, which are headings and in which order the document should be read.

Alternatively you can just pepper the document with <blink>, <marquee>, <center>, <font> and other tags that were deprecated nearly a fucking decade ago. It's just too much effort to learn to keep the presentational elements in the style sheet, nice and separate from the structure. Who needs their web pages to be easy to update, huh? Who needs them to display properly? Not you! And then leave the page up in all its hideous glory, blighting the Internet with its presence. And don't bother to close the tags either. Go on! Where's the harm?

If you fall in the latter category, please vacate the net now, cuntbubble. Unless I know and like you, in which case please experience considerable guilt while I work myself up into an obsessive-compulsive frenzy, causing lasting psychological damage to myself and those around me.
