It's now possible to replace a defective, damaged, or diseased penis with a penis grown in a laboratory -- in rabbits.

But the finding promises an amazing new treatment for infants, boys, and men who suffer penis disfigurement. The replacement organ would be grown on a penis-shaped matrix seeded with cells from the patient's own body.

Researcher Anthony Atala, MD, director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, reported the findings at this week’s annual meeting of the American Urological Association in Atlanta.

"Our goal is eventually to treat infants and adults with birth defects, penis trauma, or penis cancer," Atala tells WebMD. "But this is a future goal. We are now deciding which animal model to explore next."

While human trials are still far off, the Atala team's recent accomplishments make their goal highly credible. Atala and colleagues recently reported successfully using much the same technique to replace defective bladders in human children with spina bifida.

In the rabbit study, Atala's team removed the penises from rabbits and entirely replaced the organs with penises grown from the animal's own cells.

Atala says the new penises have blood vessels and nerves that allow them to become fully functional. Indeed, the replacement penises worked like a charm. The rabbits were able to get erections, mate with females, and get females pregnant with normal, healthy pups.

On a more serious note, I'll take the opportunity to be a dick (no pun intended) for a moment.

Being a moderate believer in Darwinism, I would think that repairing a penis that was naturally disfigured or otherwise made disfunctional would cause children to be born with the disfigurement as well.

There would be a chance for a child to be born with the disfigurement, it wouldn't be certain. Besides:

HIV/AIDS doesn't effect sperm, it is a virus that effects the entire immune system (that's why it's Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). So replacing your penis if you did have it would almost definitely have no effect whatsoever on your infectiousness.

So would one of these rabbits have a human sized penis? If so, then how on earth could it impregnante a female rabbit? Because the mental imagery is disturbing...

Meh could not resist. Though i am not sure if the brain would be able to cope with two reproductive systems, also whether the oppiste sexs brain would be able to use it also is yet to be seen. Also the vagina would be a harder piece of kit to grow in a lab.

Sure it is still based on the gonads but whether it will be able to be replicated....as easy as the penis, i doubt greatly.

But then again if one was to create a hermaphrpodite that could effectivly use both pieces of kit, it could create a third sex for humanity. Possibly a successor to humanity.

I mean once you have beings which are male and felmale, why would you need the old models?

sadly there are many reasons why it is such a hard thing to get people to embrace, one is religous, the other is fear for a supiour humanity. A caste system could arrise which seperares the version 2 from the version 1. People also fear it will create a new nazi esque empire. These are but a few of the many fears people hold.

Personaly the idea of an advanced humanity sounds like an amazing prospect.
