Hello

Hi. I don't have much to say except that I've always been interested in 'goth' things (such as fashion and literature) without even knowing that they're called such. When it comes to fashion, my main interest is in gothic jewelry, that's what I collect.
I guess you'll get to know more about me in my normal posts than here, I'm not really good at introductions!
I guess this is as good a place as any to ask a question about goth hair in general: why do so many goths dye their hair black? For the longest time I thought it was because Dracula and two of his brides in the book have long black hair (and he dresses all in black in the book) and I thought that was where the look originated when gothic fashion surfaced. Is there more to it? Am I completely wrong? Do let me know

Hi I'm new too! In answer to your question I am not entirely sure, but I assume a lot of goths dye their hair black because of the associations with things like crows and bats (animals associated with death), and also black is associated with death and the darker side of life. I mean also when goth first arrived it was like a reaction to punk, and wearing all black is a reaction to the maybe brighter colours the punks were wearing, and also the hippies before them and the brightly coloured/patterned mainstream fashion of the 70's/80's. That is what I thought originally, but I'd like to know more about what you said about Dracula. Anyway sorry if I rambled!

Welcome!

I don't really know why there's such a strong affinity for black hair. All I know is that it looks amazing.
Hmm.. Yeah. True that. The black was maybe chosen and became so traditional because it was the only dramatic colour easily available at the time that looked more sombre and didn't read as punk. Perhaps the same is true of black eyeliner and red lipstick.

I'm not sure if the black hair came directly from vampires. With such a mishmash of styles and influences it's hard to know where everything came from. But you may be onto something there - Dave Vanian of the Damned would dress like one and likely helped those styles catch on!

Welcome Dragomira, If you have black hair you look much younger than someone (like me) who has grey hair, that is if I let it grow. I collect jewelry too but silver 70s style men's rings and Navajo silver from Arizona. I have a couple of rings from the 1930s too.
