2 years

Well it's been about 2 years since I've seen the monochromatic layout of this website...

Looking down at some of the introductions it's looked like a few people have comeback, though I'm pretty sure I don't recognize anyone beyond Beyowulf and Godslayer Jillian

I wonder if there are any more...

1. What do you do? (Hobbies, job)

Printing/Signs/Book Binding/Flyers/various other printing press related tasks

2. Where are you from?

Virginia

3. Who is your favorite author?

Terry Pratchett

4. What are your favorite films?

Alice in Wonderland
Angels With Dirty Faces
Back to the Future
Beverly Hills Cop III
Casablanca
Cowboy Bebop: The movie
Iron Man
Kiki's Delivery Service
Mary Poppins
Mirror Mask
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
Night at the Roxbury
Out Cold
Scamper
Seven Pounds
Spirited Away
Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi
Stay
Stranger Than Fiction
The Sword in the Stone
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

...there are loads more..

5. What music do you want played at your wedding?

Dunno if anyone's heard of 'em but the song that everyone picks for their song at their wedding for me would be "The Ballad of Love and Hate" by The Avett Brothers. Then other music would include The Shins, maybe Seven Nations, or some of John William's Memoirs of a Geisha soundtrack, I listen to everything so it'd probably be more up to whoever the female counterpart would be.

6. At your funeral?

"Danger! High Voltage" by Electric Six

then "Putting on the Ritz" by Taco

7. This IS a gothic website, so... how do you want to die?

Who really gives a shit? Whether someone might view it as artistic, morbid or otherwise, no way hurts more than any other, apart from dying in one's sleep. The body overdoses on adrenaline and the paralysis inducing chemical the body produces upon realization that death is imminent.

8. What kind of casket would you want?

Paying money for a casket is an absolute waste

9. What's your FAVORITE outfit?

Black/Grey contrasting UFO pants, JabbaWockeeZ T-shirt, A black Japanese style hoody with all the suits of a deck of cards down the right side in white and red, studs in horizontals and verticals on the other side of it and red cat ears on the hood.... yes, cat ears, shhhhh

10. What's one thing you miss about being a little kid?

Ignorance

11. What's your favorite band?

Iron Maiden

12. What kind of education do you have? What is/was/will be your major?

I'm a Studio Art and/or a Graphic Design major

13. Why did you join?

Joined a long time ago upon reading a post about "Goth with a sledgehammer" I believe... that was 3 years ago so I don't exactly remember

14. If the first 13 questions didn't give it away. What is your gender?

Male... obviously

Tek's been banned. No one knows why, the reason is super secret and therefore probably non-existent.

I'd probably find it in my own interest not to say anything or I might get the ban hammer as well.

1 - I have no idea what the state of conflict of this site is....

2 - I kinda missed this site and wouldn't want to have the same thing happen to me, after getting that lovely welcoming back by the ever loveable godslayer, I wouldn't want to dissapoint him by getting the boot.

Fair enough. I wouldn't worry too much about keeping your nose clean though, so far the bannings seem to have been more incidental than geared at rooting out bad behavior.

My heart really did break when I saw I was left out, I was gonna not post for a while as tekajo got banned and a few posts I made got deleted for no reason other than Dirtnap didn't like them, but then I happened back and saw Mr. E Nigma and Ben posting and thought I'd say hi....

Now I'm gonna go weep in a corner for a while...oh maybe if I draw a picture while I'm at it I'll be goth by Sledgehammer standards, as my Robert Smith fandom doesn't seem to be on the list.

Hehe, welcome back!

I do know what you mean, I remember reading the Sledgehammer when I first signed up and not really giving it much thought, but since you brought it up I reread it, and had to cringe.

Quote:
* You feel the need to spend a lot of time creating things (music, art, poetry, philosophies, stories and the like)
* Your creative efforts are often described as dark, shocking, scary, morbid or strange
* You like museums and cultural centers
* You understand and even enjoy Shakespeare, Shelley, Browning or some other similar work without having to read the Cliffe Notes
* You know the difference between nihilism and existentialism, even if you don't really live by either
* You really, truly enjoy music of many kinds
* You are a very sensual person (aware of color, texture, sound, taste and scent)
* You don't understand why the people around you spend so much time watching TV
* You don't feel comfortable looking just like everyone else you know
* You do feel comfortable just being yourself, even if no one else around is anything like you
* You wonder "why" a lot, and come up with some interesting answers
* You wonder "how" a lot, and often figure it out on your own
* You don't just reject something because you don't understand it
* You base your opinions of people on who they are and what they do rather than what they look like
* You are not afraid of the unknown
* You are not afraid of the dark
* You are afraid of mediocrity
I know a bajillion people who fit the criteria, and NONE of them would consider themselves goth and I would never accuse them of being one. It describes my philosophy professor, my dad, my roommate.

Quote:
The culture was comprised of INDIVIDUALS with very little in common but their artistic drive, insatiable curiosity, extreme intellectualism, and the socially unacceptable need to be and express themselves. In a nutshell, Goth is very much like 70s Punk with a brain and good manners.
Why it says punks don't have brains or good manners I don't know, it really seems to imply that we are punks with something stuck up our asses XD And not to mention that, excluding you and a few others, a lot of people who tout themselves by the Sledgehammer definition of goth rarely display "extreme intellectualism." Infact, they tend to be extremely dumb.

And also with the punk comparison, well, would you consider someone with an attitude and a mohawk a punk even if they were listening to Hilary Duff and the Jonas Brothers? Does wearing a Metallica shirt make you a metalhead? Does displaying "extreme intellectualism" and creativity make Stephen Hawking a goth?

But the thing is, a lot of people here don't consider themselves goth or don't listen to the music, and thats fine. No one is going to judge you because you don't like Peter Murphy ^_^

Haha, I do like a decent amount of what people would call Goth rock... It just doesn't make sense to me. "Goths" are okay with using the term for a musical genre but no one else, when at the same time they took the term from something else, gothic architecture and the Goth tribe. Though, they frown on others for doing exactly the same thing, taking the term from architecture and a tribe and using it for their own purpose. I mean I know humans are hypocritical, it's part of their makeup but still.

I personally think what is goth? is as ambiguous as the question what is art?

Things like that don't have real definitions, everyone just uses them however they feel it's necessary. in the early '80's using the term to describe a type of music subculture was born, so why can't using the term to describe something else be born, just 'cause it came later? Well, them using the term came later than it being used for architecture. The discussion on a whole is full of silly hypocrisy.

I mean, look at someone like gothicusmaximus, he thinks you have to be a goth rock fanboy to be called a goth.

If anything the actual musicians would represent who the goths were, not the fanboys who cling to the "musical style." They'd just be goth rock fans, not goths themselves, what the hell do fans do that could even come close to being considered what the gothic term the way they use it is meant to imply. So far in all my research it's used to describe a musical genre, the lyrics, etc... not the fans of it. You don't call a lesbian heterosexual for liking heterosexual porn. You don't define a straight man straight just 'cause he watches heterosexual porn, what you define them as is based on what they are, not what they are fans of.

You don't call fans of metal rock.. metal, they have their own names, like metal heads... In a sense I guess being goth as a person really is non-existent based one the way most people go about describing it, and yeah after reading what you said I went back and re-read the sledgehammer. And it is ambiguous, I honestly don't even think the term should be used for anything other than the architecture, that's why I've never labeled myself as one, but based one what everyone else is saying I wouldn't label anyone else on this site one either...

You're just arguing semantics, goth has become an acceptable term for fans of goth rock, as you call a fan of punk rock a punk. Also like punk, goth meant something before we took the label, fine, but I don't see any barbarians or fifteenth century architects taking an issue with it. If goth is undefinable then anyone and anybody can label themselves "goth", and there really isn't anything special about goth since we're all arguably gothic. But Andi Sexgang called us goths so dammit, thats what we're gonna call ourselves! He does not lie.

well when the subculture was new there was more to it than the music, those things have just kind of fallen away and all that we are left with is the music

I don't have a problem with goths being people who are a fan of goth rock, my problem is those same people having an issue with other people using the term elsewhere. People who think it's only to do with the music.

Fans of goth rock are goths, but fans of gothic literature can't be goth? That's my gripe. Not that they are calling themselves goth, but that they frown at the word being used elsewhere.

And I honestly never knew people who were fans of punk rock were called punks, they've just always said they're into the punk rock scene or into punk rock music, and I lived in DC, somewhere where it's hugely present and I honestly had never heard any of them call eachother "punks"
