Fashion DIY tips and gratuitous plugs. And hair. Hair! Flow it, show it. Wait...no. That's some hippie musical. Nevermind. |

Get a friend to wear a t-shirt saying "I'm with goth" on it with an arrow pointing to you.
Works every time *thumbs up*

Sounds like a good plan
Alternatively you can listen to some goth music and either play it loud enough for everyone to hear or sing along (I recommend singing, it proves your goth enough to know all the words)

Express all the macabre thoughts running through your head at any given moment, I'm fairly certain people will figure it out, the clothes don't hurt, either.

I have never had the words "I'm goth" come out of my mouth. Honestly, I don't even like calling myself that. I am what I am and if that means I am part of a subculture, great, but I am not going to go around proclaiming I have a label, you know? I wear all black all the time, have jet black hair and worship Ian Curtis and Siouxsie Sioux. I think most people get what I like.

Just out of curiosity: Have you ever heard of the term tongue-in-cheek?

That 69 Eyes shirt is even more tacky than the band itself.

Hey, I like 69 Eyes. ..except I listen to them as if they were a parody band of all things 'goth'. =P
Really, though? How about you try being yourself.. Not try being a 'goth', just yourself. And if it is yourself is to dress in a somber, monochromatic colour scheme and listen to punk rock's minor-key offshoot, then so be it.
Don't get caught up in trying to make sure people label you whatever. That's immature and just stupid. =)

great point, you don't want to label yourself goth to look cool or something.
It comes through time where people pick it up and notice, "yeah that persons definitely under the goth category" but they won't say it to your face like "HEY YOUR GOTH!"
... Yeah life.

I don't announce to the world that i'm goth, nor that I wear any goth fashion. But I simply wear black almost everyday to school, and some eyeliner - suddenly I found out my friends call me a 'goth' behind my back.
well, obviously they don't know what real goths are like.

Does it really matter though? We can be reserved Goths! Reserved Goths, who do not feel any need to dress and act like the archetypal stereotypical Goth, but are happy to dress how they want rather than conforming to a subcultural stereotype.
I am at best a Casual Goth; I don't feel any need to dye my hair black, wear velvety clothes, big chunky boots, mascara, etc, etc, etc. I typically wear black veggie boots, black jeans, a FOTN/NFD/Last Rites/Eden House t-shirt, a wide brimmed hat with badges on it...there are Goth elements in there, but they are not SCREAMING GOTH.
And what is Goth, anyway? There are so many types...Geek Goth / Casual Goth / Steampunk / Victorian Goth / Romantic Goth / Faearie Goth, etc, etc, etc.
