That's a great one though it lacks the guitar work of Robert Quine, one of the most underrated guitarists who also did REed's Blue Mask makes Dogs a helluva jam. Keith Richards does guitar work on one track as well..

I was wondering if anyone else on this forum enjoyed Jazz/Fusion such as Allan Holdsworth, Soft Machine, Al Di Meola, or Jaco Pastorius ?

Allan Holdsworth ~ The Fifth Solo

Soft Machine-Fanfare~ All white.(Live at Paris Theatre 1972)

Jaco Pastorius - A Portrait Of Tracy

Al Di Meola (with Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin)

John Mclaughlin mahavishnu Orchestra 1974

Holdsworth is an incredible guitarist to say the least. I especially enjoy his prog-rock years in Tempest, UK and Soft Machine... His "fusion" music is a bit less to my taste, but he never spoils true musicality and has a sense of "weirdness" few other musicians have.

Mac Laughlin can be stellar, but sometimes a bit generic too...

Al Di Meola : cool when in trio. Not as cool when taking the leading part in a band, IMO.

Pastorius I don't know much about, actually...

In this field, I recently tried again some Pat Metheny, I had horrendous memories of his sound and writing. I didn't change my mind about most of his recorded output, but I discovered he participated in much more obscure projects where he plays raucous electric free-jazz of the best kind ; and he can have sparks of genius when improvizing live.

But in the end, I still think most of the "fusion" music of the 70's and on is just over-indulgent musical megalomania choking in its own bad taste, like most prog-rock after 1985.

by the way, here's some recent stuff from Le Cabaret De L'Impasse, I now "play" xylophone and jam-blocks when I'm not growling

Sarah Vaughan isn't bad. Or Ertha Kitt. Not sure if either counts as jazz or not.
Seconded on Ella Fitzgerald.

Anyways, I like free jazz the most so I usually listen to shit like Ornette Coleman, late John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Albert Ayler, Sun Ra, John Zorn, Noah Howard, Archie Shepp, Evan Parker, Pharoah Sanders, Cecil Taylor, Charles Mingus etc. but I listen to all kinds of jazz really. Except smooth jazz, fuck smooth jazz.

(vindicatedxjin is right by the way, St. Germain is worth listening to.)
Your text is always music to my ears. You did forget Miles Davis, though,

And Naked City pretty much does everything.
