E-E, I was wondering about that ... the sense that listening to satelite radio brings back the sense of how it felt to listen to radio when you were younger and the medium was wilder, less censored and much more free-formatted. I would be curious to see if you still feel that way about it in a few weeks.

I haven't listened to broadcast radio much lately, but internet radio stations have been intriguing to me in recent years for similar reasons. Actually, I think that is probably more like pirate radio ... I always wished I had that experience - the subversive act of listening to an illegal radio station!

I worked for them for 4 years. On top of that I grew up in Cuero and south east texas for the first few years of my life. Charles used to visit the store often because he had relatives in Nacogdoches and this was his "pet" store. He was a very disarming little man that carries an umbrella everywhere he goes...anyway..I ramble

HEB is one of the largest employers in Texas. It's the 10th largest grocery chain in america( based on gross profit) and this year it celebrated it's 100th birtday.
It was started in kirville as a dry goods and staples store by a young woman. It steadily grew over the years and was taken over by her son Howard who changed the name to HEB(his initials) and moved the company's headquarters from kirville to Corpus Christi. After howard passed, his son Charles took it over; moved the headquarters back to the hill country( the san antonio old armory) and that is where it's been since.

Aside from being one of the largerst employers in Texas, it's also one of the biggest contributors to charity in the nation. In fact, if your ever in the hill country of texas, you can't go more than a few blocks without seeing the words HEB or the family sir name on a street sign or a tennis court or llibrary or something.

This family reminds me of the song " a boy named sue" because they had to be successful with the last name that they had.

HEB is the intials of Howard E Butt

Yeah, I know what you mean. This caught me off guard too.

There are people who are proficient studio singers. There are people who are great songwriters. And then there are people who have singularly unique voices ... distinct and unmistakeable. Lou Rawls was one of those voices.

For decades he has been one of my favorite male singers ... I am really saddened by the knowledge that I will never hear him sing live again.

"You'll never find, as long as you live
Someone who loves you tender like I do
You'll never find, no matter where you search
Someone who cares about you the way I do

Whoa, I'm not braggin' on myself, baby
But I'm the one who loves you
And there's no one else! No-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh one else "

can't you hear him in your head now?

I wonder if there is any grocery store chain which is truly national. Anyone know?

Stores named after guys with odd names seem common. Here we have Harris Teeter.

However, that's nothing compared to the amusing Piggly Wiggly of the south.

I remember Target and Safeway back in Oz, but that's about it. And they're probably as aussie as General Motors.

Maybe I can try for Andromeda, next.
I used to love locating the constellation Orion in the clear, crisp Wisconsin sky. It was my favorite constellation.

Oh what fun I could have playing connect the dots on your back!

Random question: How long do I have to spend kissing ass before I get the money deserved for the work I do?? *frustrated growl*

My entire county is dealing with a selective smoking ban right now. All restaurants serving food, (where food surpasses liquor sales) are banned from allowing smoking within the building. The business has dropped 30% from my restaurant alone and we are fighting for an exemption but the future looks bleak. Anyone else have this sort of thing happen to them?

Nope, not over here, our motto "Smoke till you drop" our other motto "Drink till you can't drink no more, then smoke."

D.C. just passed a smoking ban (WOO-HOO!!!) for restaurants. I'll be interested to read about the effects it has on restaurants and patrons.

Unfortunately, the ban doesn't apply to bars or clubs for another year.

We had one of those in Tempe for a few years already. It actually took quite a toll on the businesses around town. The only way you can smoke is outside on a patio. some businesses not only lost money, but then had to SPEND money to build a patio and have extra security, as you cannot have alcoholic drinks outside a bar.

My city did that a few years ago, except it's for ALL public buildings. And the restaurants seem to be as busy as ever... It's especially nice for the staff because they don't get lung cancer from second-hand-smoke anymore.

Did you know that an aligator can not stick out its tongue, or that Donald duck was banned from New Zealand because he doesn't wear any pants? Ant always fall over to the right when toxified, and giraffes have the same amout of bones in their necks as humans. Tidbits of information for y' all.
