The red looks good, but using commercial brand permanent or semi permanent dye will make it an expensive colour to maintain.
I don't know if you can get it in the US, but there is a company called Directions, who make hair colourants. The stuff is ready mixed in a pot, and though it will wash out their red is lovely and bright (don't wear anything white or have white pillows if you get damp or sweaty headed )
It's supposedly made from some sort of natural/vegetable type dye. I used it a few years ago on the last 3 inches of my hair, which gave me bright red ends and the rest black.
The dye costs less than £4 a pot here in the UK which is about... $8 ish over there I believe.
