Neo-goth?

In February of next year I am to DJ at DarcTyde Nocturne, a local festival of Electro, Darkwave and Neo-goth.
I have quite a bit of electro and darkwave in my collection, but am truly dumbfounded as to what exactly Neo-goth is supposed to be. I have only ever seen the term used in art, as a reference to darker forms of contemporary artworks.
Now, my question to you is this: What exactly is Neo-goth, as pertaining to music?
Is there even such a genre?
Your input will be much appreciated.

I didn't even know it was actually a serious term until I used it in some other thread. Apparently, it's New Goth music (though I had used it as a somewhat negative term to refer to false Goths like Manson and HIM).

Yeah, neo means new but now we're going to fight over what "new gothic" is because I'm sure my definition as a 38 year old is going to differ from that of a 14 year old.

Can we just say that neo is a vague, generic prefix that people put in front of words when they're not sure if they should include something in a larger group? We have neo-nazis, neo-pagans, neo-folk, and now neo-gothic. It seems the prefix is just used as an excuse to enlarge a group and weaken its boundries enough to allow someone else to lump their victim into said group.

See if you can find out what type of bands played at the festival last time. You should be able to figure out what is electro and darkwave and thus know what they consider neogoth.

Thanks for the input, Albert Mond and Man in Room 5. As a 32 year old my definition of 'new goth' would probably also be quite different from the younger crowd's.

So here I sit, non the wiser. Which bands do I include, and which do I exclude? I refuse to play Manson and H.I.M.

stolide, that would have worked, but unfortunately last year's Nocturne was a retrospective, so they played mostly gothic rock and death rock.

Hmm.
Isn't it just third wave type stuff?
EBM/Synthpop?

That might be, Malice, but we were told not to play any EBM, so the confusion escalates. Perhaps some Synthpop/Future Pop?
Also, I've found an album called 'This is Neo Goth' released by Cleopatra records, but a lot of the bands on there are pretty old, and others I would not even classify as goth.

Aaah.
The Cruxshadows perhaps?
And play a bunch of darkwave stuff.
It's what's advertised, they can't complain.

I thought Darkwave was "Neo-Goth."

Stuff like the Cruxshadows and the Birthday Massacre, perhaps?

I think my set will consist of a lot of Darkwave, as you suggested, as well as The Cruxshadows and The Birthday Massacre. The organizers themselves were not very helpful in my queries, so they themselves don't really seem to know what Neo-goth really is.
I'll just play what I know.

Thank you for the input, everyone.

Oh, Android Lust and contemporary Gary Numan just sprang to mind.

I think that was the point of the album, dear. XD

Fuck Neo-Goth. I ended up with a "This is Neo-Goth compilation CD and it was pretty much some kind of spooky techno or techno remixes of Orgy.

Play classic Industrial and some rhythmic noize. W.A.S.T.E is some decent kind of noize stuff.

Neo-goth sounds like what people called me two years after the Matrix when I would walk around in my hideous big black coat...

I absolutely love Android Lust, but don't really know what to classify them as. Harshly ambient electronica?

That compilation was pretty terrible. I think the Orgy was the saddest part of the whole thing - at one point I really respected Jay Gordon as a musician. Somewhere between Vapor Transmissions and that pathetic follow up album something went very, very wrong. He seemed to do all right for himself on the Queen of the Damned soundtrack, too... such a shame.

Get some VAST, it has been long enough that most people wouldn't remember who they were and you might be able to slip it in as something new and amazing.

Neo-Goth... isn't that emo? Or is that Post-Goth? Neo-Post-Hardcore-Trad-Darkwave?

Bah screw it.

Or does emo have nothing to do with goth other than they both sprung from punk?

Ambient industrial darkwave. No, I don't know.

Wikipedia has her down as industrial rock, which I really don't agree with.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. I think I've got quite a good playlist set up now. If any of the organizers complain about the songs I play, tough. They've been so vague about the whole event that I believe much of what they said can be open to interpretation.
