Does anyone here speak Latin?
Does anyone here translate/understand Latin? I know it is a dead language, but my school teaches it, starting in 1st grade, so I'm a bit fluent, but not completely, overall fluent.

Was that a slow clap, or just a steady paced one?

Golf clap directed at Saya.
And yeah, I'm pretty sure that second phrase is Greek. Kyrie is O, Lord or something, I think.

Quia peccavi nimis cogitatione, verbo, et opere.
Kyrie, eleison is actually greek, sorry. All the latin I know I just memorized from "Things I learned from Catholicism that I thought sounded really cool." And I just kinda assumed it was latin too. It means "Lord have mercy".

I've never been particularly fond of pig latin. As for regular latin I hope someday to learn.

Damn, I wish I had started learning Latin in first grade. I'm a double major in Classics, so I speak the language fairly well, but probably wouldn't describe myself as 'fluent'. I'll hopefully be able to do so by the time I'm done with school, though.

Nah, Pig Latin's dumb, I agree. I used to think it was sort of cute many years ago. I, too, wish I could have learned Latin at some point. I don't want to start now because college-level language courses have the worst system, or at least here they do (although it's also dependent on the department itself). My high school offered it--as an online course. Only juniors and seniors could participate. What great help THAT is.

So..... can I ask something.
Beside looking through the ancient scripture, why would we be speaking old and ancient language ?
ps. This is not a joke question. :|

I ended up taking my SATs in Latin 3 years ago. I remember some but sadly I did not keep it up, so I lost quite a bit. But I can still pick things out here and there. *yay*

Latin is the mother of Romance languages, as you should know, and thus to have greater understanding of such languages one may learn Latin; knowing Latin allows us to make more sense of numerous modern languages. Linguists try preserving dead and dying languages for such reasons. It's no secret that learning Latin provides a person with a greater grasp on vocabulary in English and Romance languages. (English is related to German, which is not Romantic, but ~1/3 of our vocabulary is comprised of French vocabulary.)

kk, that's unerstandable.
But... Wouldn't it be weird if you're the only one in your town speaking latin ?
That's weird for me. :/

People don't generally "speak" Latin, however. Usually it's just written, because that's the only form of it we know. Even Linguists speculate on its spoken form.

Why is to understand ancient texts an insufficient reason for you, Shade?
