how do you feel about fashion as you have gotten older?

so, how do you? When I was younger, I wore a wide range of things, from vampire dress to fishnets to torn up stockings. I was all about the fact that my clothes HAD to show who I was and that this is what I liked. But I realized the other day when one of my friends pointed out that I have become very simple in my clothing choices as I have gotten older. I have about 4 completely different outfits in my dresser and it doesn't seem to bother me that much. Yes, I still find that I need to express myself through my appearence, I always have, and yes I do need to buy some more summer clothes, but it seems like now I am much more comfortable with being simple, yet unique with my clothing choices. For example, I prefer black vests and black button downs with a few peices of jewlery when going out and simple t shirts and black pants on a lazy day instead of fishnets, and huge boots, and stockings everywhere. So, does anyone else find that their style becomes much more refined and simple as they get older?

It happened to me a bit as well, though I still love and wear my studded jackets and spikes. I think it's because as we get older we lose that compulsive feeling of having to prove something, how different and rebellious we are.

^exactly. I also used to wear a ton of makeup. After work, the makeup bag got attacked, on days off, make up all damn day. Now I just wear powder to even out my skin and make it match my neck (my body is insanely pale, including my neck, but my face is a wee bit darker, I guess because I am in the sun driving so much). I mean, I'll wear eyeliner and shadow and all that when I go out, but not on an everyday occasion anymore.

Here, here. And also I think, eventually, it will dawn to one that there are other things to worry about than how one looks. Yes, I still fuss in the morning about what I should wear but I make sure it doesn't interfere with the rest of my schedule (or I usually worry about that the night before so I don’t lag in the morning). Now though, I have gotten over the fact that I should have other considerations (i.e. the weather, the occasion, etc. etc.) in mind and not just don something grandiose because I want to proclaim my persuasion.

I don't know, I never felt like my clothing made any profound statement other than what was on top of my clean laundry pile at the beginning of a given day.

I guess my outfits have simplified a bit, I don't find myself looking for the fishnets or pvc when weekend clubbing time comes around. Mostly doing t-shirt / jacket / jeans kind of thing.

My primary motivation is really heading out to dance to music - I'm absurdly shy so I don't really dress in a flashy manner. I usually try to go for something that I won't feel uncomfortable sitting around in while I'm trying to catch my breath again.

My clothes are pretty cheap (in price)...but I def have a style...just a lot of colors but not too gaudy.
One prof. at my school tells me almost everyday that I'm good at branding myself and have a good style.

I have maybe... 4 actual outfits. One formalish/sharp 2 punkish/deathrockish and then there's either the school uniforms or just my outfit that's not exactly punk or goth, but more... just weird yet simple.

I've been settling into a single aesthetic rather that jumping between many. I know exactly what I like and largely how to make it myself.

Perhaps in my casual outfits there's been a bit of refinement, but that stems from clubbing in which I get all the 'playing dress-ups' urges out of my system in one go.

I used to dress way cartoon punk all the time. Now I tone it down and have a pretty standard outfit,

Vest, Band Shirt, BDU pants, boots. That's it.

My hair has also changed alot. It used to be every color on the planet, and was flat ironed to death and them teased and spike in every which way. Now it is a simple black bob. I actually bought some hair products to use to wear it so it looks nice in its natural curly state so I don't have to straighten it as much.

I see a tendency toward either corset and 50´s rockabilly style (very ladylike) or very simple punk style wear in my everyday wardrobe nowadays. I tend to go easier on the spikes and the black eyeshadow, and am actually glad to be rid of my hawk maintenance routines now that I´m growing it out. I think that´s about it, really. I tend to go very simple and sometimes, when I want to flaunt my feminine side, very classy, with high heels and dresses, but really, I would say I´ve only settled into knowing what clothes I like to wear. And there´s the matter of having to look serious in the classical music business, which is hard enough with green hair. But I don´t reckon myself that old yet, I´m only 21, so I guess I will laugh at this in ten years´ time.

I've taken to investing in high quality pieces instead of loads of stuff that I will only wear for a year or so. I have also started to trade in my neons for rich jewel tones. A few years ago I would have most likely told you that Kohls was my favorite place to shop for clothing but now I can say without a doubt that Banana Republic is my favorite store.

I'm just happy I actually found a style. When I was younger, I didn't even like the clothes I wore, but I had no idea what else to wear. [Over-sized T-shirts, long and loose blue jeans, sneakers.] Now that I have a style, I'm enjoying it immensely! ^_^

I still despise wearing make-up though; even the light stuff feels weird to me.

My style has evolved into one that is much more dressy and cohesive. Over the past few years, I have felt more comfortable with my aesthetic than ever before.

I think I've changed a bit, I'm a little more sedate in day to day life.

I tend not to wear really long frilly skirts during the day anymore unless I am going into town. Day to day I am a bit more casual, and I do wear jeans (sometimes blue ones) and and stuff more often if I'm not going anywhere. On my top half I tend to go for more feminine tops than before, I used to wear a lot of t shirts that were baggy, black and had bands and stuff on them, so I guess maybe I have swapped tops and bottoms, but that's kind of down to loosing enough weight to be able to do it.

Make up wise I tend to need a bit more these days, I don't know why but I always seem to look a bit tired without it despite getting plenty of sleep. I did have quite long hair and when I cut it I found it took a good few years off me. I am kind of toying with growing it back but I'm not sure whether it would be that flattering. I also don't feel as comfortable with dying it wild colours anymore and tend to stick to either black, red or my natural dark brown in summer.

ha me too, I was a freshman in high school back then. Unless you could get up to Chicago to the cool shops, you were stuck with Hot Topic and the Rockabillia order forms in Metal Edge magazine LOL



When not at the club or other events, I typically wear skirts or dresses but sometimes wear blue jeans and other things that aren't necessarily "goth" .I do tend to go for things that have a retro, punky or ****** type edge to them. there are still places I will never shop or things I would never wear but for the most part, my closet has a wider variety now. I still love "dressing up" and experimenting but like the others said, clothes don't "define" me like I thought they did in high school.

Well, I recently shaved my mohawk off because I no longer care how I
dress, if you consider hairstyle a part of this, and I tend to wear just cargo shorts of some sort and any shirt really most of the time a band tee since I go to a lot of shows and they're cheap. It's comfortable.

Years ago, my budding interest in goth fashion manifested itself through all those oversized, outlandish pieces of chrome and pewter necklaces and rings with dragons and skulls and all those cliche motifs, and also with an 'anything black' choice in clothing, which, I confess, included the occasional Hot Topic piece. As time progressed, however, my style, though still not devoid of black by far, became more refined and tailored. Alchemy Gothic-esque baubles were replaced by more restrained, but still interesting, silver jewelry. Fashion has become less about blaring to the world that I am goth and more about attiring myself in a manner that is in tune with my personal aesthetic, regardless of whether or not others would judge me to be goth by my outward appearance.

I realised that the deathrock/goth look made me look like a frumpy walking velvet curtain of doom with a couple of ripped fishnets thrown in when I'm really a slim delightful young thing.

I don't dress to fit in anymore, I dress how I want and what suits me, which is more edgy mainstream fashion. I'm a total topshop and H&M whore. And I look pretty damn spiffing if you don't mind me saying so.
