Swirly eyeliner patterns
Can anyone give me any tips on how to do this? I have seen a few people wearing really cool eyeliner patterns that swirl all around they're eyes, but when I try it it just looks silly.

You need a hella steady hand, darling.
Anywho, I think the whole thing looks terribly mallgoth. I guess it's alright for special halloween, but other than that I think it just looks vulgar.

Typically, that is considered "mallgoth", but you will need a waterproof liquid eyeliner and something to rest your elbow on.
This video makes me laugh, but I suppose you could use it for tips.

Skip ahead to 7 minutes for the "end result". In my opinion, it should be titled "how to cover your face in eyeliner and look like a dumbass 101"

small, simple designs that bring attention to the eye itself can look fantastic but anything large, elaborate, or that wanders under the eye tends to look quite tacky

As someone else said, a steady hand and a lot of practice is probably the best thing. I have never done hat but even just a line slightly outward (like a 40's line) takes a lot of practice, years later you still tend to mess it up a lot (or I do at anyway). I would not worry about what it is considered (I clicked that link above too and I feel bad for that little girl, everyone leaving rude comments, she should do whatever she wants to her own face and her own video too, sheesh). If you like the look, why not?
Anyway, maybe try some actual brushes to apply instead of the saturated brush or felt type tip that comes in the eyeliner itself. MAC has some great brushes as well as a cake eye makeup that you can use with transformer liquid, that may be better than traditional liquid liner if you are doing it over a larger area (meaning on skin that is not real near the eye and thus a slightly different texture, with pores present, etc.).

I agree completely. Ive seen some designs look really really good but they are smaller and/or simpler then such an elaborate design. That video is an example of what NOT to do. She does have a steady hand though, least much more then mine. I dont wear eyeliner much so ended stabbing myself in the eye like 3 times putting on pencil eyeliner.

What. The. Fuck.
That bitch in the video made her make-up not only look awful, but she also succeeded in properly replicating Elven war paint. Somewhat. Just add pointed ears and some leaves on those vines, and she's good to go.

um....it's good if you're going as a warrior princess for Halloween, but in public, you're a ridicule magnet.

I really feel that a warrior princess would have more pride than that.

Yeah, look at Xena--no make-up, and she whooped ass. Both immortal and mortal.

I have to agree with a lot of what has been said here, lots of swirly stuff around the eyes often looks quite stupid. That being said I have on rare occasions seen it work, the only advice I can give from what I've seen is keep it minimal and confine it the sides (towards the direction of your temple) and don't put any underneath the eye.
I don't wear eye-liner myself so I don't have any tips for applying it I'm afraid.

The girl in that video is atrocious :/ She can do what she likes and all, I just think it looks terribly ungraceful.
If you're gonna do swirls, stick to something like this. Not scribbling twigs all over your cheeks.

I am not a fan of swirls like that, and certainly not to the degree that prat did it to. I think swirls look wrong on my eyes. I prefer thin straight lines, but will add a little mini spiral with a tail in between the outer edges of the top and bottom lines. Then I usually add 3 very small dots going straight out to the temple. Nothing drastic.

In all fairness the swirls she did were fantastic, it's just a shame that after the first couple she kept going and going and going like some kind of possessed energizer bunny. Also it ceases to be eye makeup when the majority of it on your cheeks.

She needs better fingernail polish remover! That's my biggest issue.
Anyway, unless you are going as a Elven warrior somewhere, don't do that.
I would suggest a light line with whatever eyeshadow you use coming off the crease of your eye.
If you insist upon swirls: A steady hand, a lot of practice and the ability to stop yourself at one swirl.
