GENETICALLY? Err...how exactly? Genes are just that..genes. They determine your height, eye colour, blood type ect. They don't determine one's choice of music or taste in art/entertainment/clothing. Life and experience do that.

I was actually born quite metal. I emerged from my mom's organ of sex wearing corpsepaint and gigantic spiked gauntlets. Even in the middle of the second trimester, sonograms revealed me to be throwing up the horns. My getting into goth music was a fairly dramatic turn around.

In all seriousness, though, I do feel that, although I obviously wasn't born a goth per se, I possess an inherent penchant for the macabre, at least to some extent. As a younger kid my favorite television program was "In Search Of..." with Leonard Nimoy- after watching an episode pertaining to vampires, I read Dracula, through which I was introduced to gothic literature as a whole, through which I was introduced to goth music. I'd project that should one follow the chain of events which provokes an individual to become a goth to its inception, one will, more often than not, discover that innate taste has at least some role in that individual's genesis as a member of the subculture.

I can say I was born a goth...
We are a religious family (says the community), or because my uncle is a priest! I was born a goth and will die as one!
Others say I'm emo, but I'm really not 'cause I don't cry a lot, I only whine. lol! My parents don't really mind if I wear black, all they care about is my education! They don't mind if I wear fishnets (gloves, no stockings yet), They don't mind if I wear scary make up, to be honest they want to have an identity because they don't want me to be like other girls...

the only way to be goth it to be born one. a person who covers themselves in black to try to fit into the subculture is just a poser.

I wasn't born Goth, but I did lean towards the shade somewhat. As I got older it just became a way of being.

I'm sorely tempted to create a Goth version of Pygmalion

Wow... this whole thread is completely lame.

I wasn't born goth because FACT: You are not born a goth.

But since I wasn't born a goth, I must be a poseur ^^. But I'd really like to see someone other than myself justify my existence.

This might sound wrong, only cause it's the internet, but wouldn't your mom be the one to justify your existence?

I mean, she is the one who brought you into this world

The whole discussion comes down to the fact that one can't enjoy a certain kind of music upon birth.

Good point. But my actions and my life and body and what have you are my own.

Yeah, even I knew that and I'm practically a month old round here! It doesn't help that they are the same people who seriously think it's a lifestyle.

I view life from a very spiritual angle, and I have come to believe goth to involve certain beings who are spiritually different than most of the others. I mean to say that it's an inherently spiritual trait actual goths have within them, and I speak from experience as well. I've tried everything to abscond the label of goth but have failed, because it was just something in me, and this is the case with every other goth I have known.

Oh my god...

God damn, people. Goth is not divine. Holy shit.

The only thing sillier than thinking goth is a lifestyle and not a musical genre, is people who think being goth is some sort of divine charge.

Seriously, to those that think that, go fuck yourself. You're not special. You have a dark aesthetic and you are fucking BORING.

It's utterly ridiculous to think you were "born" to a certain aesthetic.

Well maybe you could be born goth if your mom listened to a lot of Bauhaus when she was pregnant, babies do tend to like things they heard a lot in the womb

Actually I'm pretty sure that that's a myth. I read somewhere that a baby's brain isn't developed enough to make memories in the womb.
