The Most Influential Gothic Albums

What, in your opinion, were the albums most influential to darkwave, deathrock, and gothic music in general?

(in no particular order)
Bauhaus-In the Flat Field
Christian Death-Only Theatre of Pain
the Cure-Pornography
Alien Sex Fiend-Acid Bath
Joy Division-Substance
Switchblade Symphony-Serpentine Gallery

Marilyn Manson-Antichrist Superstar
HIM-Dark Light

Just kidding!

Sisters- First and Last and Always.
Fields of The Nephilim-Elizium. (Not sure if it's "goth rock," but it's still pretty awesome...

It's not "The" Bauhaus. Just... Bauhaus. Other than that, I'm inclined to agree with Sobeh.

Also, Virgin Prunes - "...If I Die, I Die".

And maybe Sol Invictus - "In The Jaws of the Serpent"

I can't believe I missed "JuJu"!
I also agree with "Dawnrazor", "If I Die, I Die" and "First, Last, and Always". I must have really been unfocused last night. I couldn't get those hands off my wrists! The horror!

I love you for including dates. I hate it when people think goth was started by kids in the early 1990's. You know! Hippies in the 70's, punk in the 80's, and goth in the 90's! *rolls eyes*

Anyway, good albums, everyone. I have nothing to add....

hmmm, influential in terms of Goth music on the Goth scene, or albums that influenced the music?

If it's in terms of important Goth music:

Joy Division - Closer
Bauhaus - In the Flat Field
Christian Death - Only Theatre Of Pain
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Juju
Sisters Of Mercy - First and Last and Always
Alien Sex Fiend - Who's Been Sleeping In My Brain?
The Cure - Pornography
Sex Gang Children - Song and Legend
Specimen - Wet Warm Cling Film Red Velvet Crush
Fields Of The Nephalim - Dawnrazor
Kommunity FK - The Vision and The Voice
Clan Of Xymox - Medusa
Dead Can Dance - Into The Labyrinth
The Birthday Party - Junkyard
Cocteau Twins - Garlands

(i limited it to 15 becuase I'd already made this list in a 'Top 15 Essential Goth Albums' thread on another forum)

If it's in terms of albums that influenced Goth then there are way too many to list. It would have to include albums by:

Leonard Cohen
Velvet Underground
David Bowie
Iggy Pop
Lou Reed
T-Rex
The Doors
The Rolling Stones etc etc

Not forgetting, of course, that bands within the genre have obviously had massive influence on the music (Joy Division, Siouxsie & The Banshees etc.)

Meh. I really wasn't around during the rise of 'goth' music, but I know several bands who claim to have been influenced by Nine Inch Nails, 'The Downward Spiral', and I know early Ministry gave way to industrial as we know it. Kudos to whoever mentioned Throbbing Gristle, I'd have to throw in Skinny Puppy as the same sort of influence.

I decided anything before '75 was too early to be differentiated from the vacuous influence of 'it was influential because it happened first', and nothing after '89 because the first wave had definately happened by then. Last, if a band is already listed, I don't add later releases, Bauhaus the exception there.

Thus, we get the following list, because I'm bored outta my gourd:

---

1977 The Sex Pistols Never Mind The Bollocks
1979 Bauhaus Bela Lugosi's Dead (single)
1980 Bauhaus In the Flat Field
1980 Joy Division Closer
1981 Siouxsie and the Banshees Ju Ju
1982 Christian Death Only Theatre of Pain
1982 The Cure Pornography
1982 Virgin Prunes ...If I Die, I Die
1982 The Birthday Party Junkyard
1982 Cocteau Twins Garlands
1983 Alien Sex Fiend Ignore the Machine
1983 Specimen ~~
1983 Sex Gang Children Song and Legend
1983 Alien Sex Fiend Who's Been Sleeping In My Brain?
1983 Kommunity FK The Vision and The Voice
1985 The Cult Love
1985 The Sisters of Mercy First and Last and Always
1986 Clan Of Xymox Medusa
1987 Fields of The Nephilim Dawnrazor
1988 The Mission Children
1989 Sol Invictus In The Jaws of the Serpent

That's an excellent list, Sobeh. I'm going to a Bauhaus concert in a few weeks (supporting NIN), but I still don't understand how Bauhaus can still be playing after all these years. I hope with all my little, black heart they're not going to be a cover band!

Bush, the Cars, Godhead, Smashing Pumkins, Staind, and STATIC-X?! I... fucking... hate you. None of those bands are even "gothic" in the sense of deathrock, to the very least. >

Also, to gain the 'influential' tag, I think one must stick by my chronological criteria. Second and third wave might have different bands, and I'd not be so sure about who would count, but even so, since 2nd and all subsequent waves were first and foremost influenced by first wave, the original compilation, plus any that may have slipped through the cracks, must remain the 'influential' ones. The rest are coming out of that.
