If you think that's bad, then I have nothing more to say in this topic because one sentence will do.
'thailand is full of shits'

Have you seen the way temples look around here ?
I could have mistaken them for palaces o_o

Isn't it also very bureaucratic? Perhaps thats the wrong word, but the monks are held in too high a regard and have a lot of special laws protecting them?

Not directly, but there're always a twist that yank them off the road to jail.

Ah, I think I was thinking of how they won't let an order of nuns be established and the nuns would get in trouble if they did, because there's a law about impersonating monks, and they could get slammed with that.

"In Thailand, a country which never had a tradition of fully ordained nuns (bhikkhuni), there developed a separate order of non-ordained female renunciates called Mae Ji. At the beginning of the 21st century some Buddhist women in Thailand have started to introduce the bhikkhuni sangha in their country as well, even if public acceptance is still lacking" -
Taken from Wiki, so the info might be half assed.
However i read somewhere that the women must shave their heads and wear all white, rather than saffron, as the monks wear.

Yeah, in their wiki photo they're wearing all white: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mae_ji
I know its only a colour, but what a sin. Still, its remarkable how creative women have gotten, in Thailand and throughout history, to practice Buddhism.
What I find weird though is why they think Buddha never allowed women to become nuns? They're Theravada Buddhists and in their canon he did allow them to do so, one of the sutras of the Pali canon was written by women, Therigatha "Songs Of The Sisters", and from what they wrote it seems they were contemporaries of Buddha who saw themselves as equal to monks.

Well, people picking and choosing what excerpts of their religion to follow, isn't new.

That is so true, I wet my pants a little while reading it
....and it doesn't smell like pee
...........and it's actually pronounce Mae-shee, and is suppose to mean 'nun matron', which is redundant.
The actual word is the funny part, we call nuns .. shee, or she if you would.
This is what I called accidental sexist

It works if mods are loathe to use their powers. On another forum I'm on the only time someone gets banned is if its a spam bot, sometimes trolls if they're really out of hand but usually they're too funny.
Once I had posts deleted and received a warning on a Buddhist forum for talking about Thich Nhat Hanh's interpretation of reincarnation. Actually I think Buddhist boards were the most vicious forums I ever went on.

These guys are fucking militant. And fast. And many. I know we bitch about the way this site is run sometimes, but plenty of us'd probably be gone within a week if it was moderated with any real regularity. For some reason I kinda like the idea of vicious Buddhist forums though.

I was going to say "If you ever troll E-Sangha, let me know, it'll be glorious", but last I heard they were getting sued by a Zen priest or something like that, and it must have worked because the forums are down now XD

Hahahaha, it was us Zen Buddhists who were the unorthodox heretics on that site! It was nuts. I remember thats why the mod took issue with me, because I quoted a Zen master instead of someone of a more "authentic" practice.

True - I guess when you're ripping off a religion from a totally different culture, you best make sure you get the real shizzle.
Oh well - they ever get their shit back online, you come see me, angel-puss.

Ah nuts. I can't wait for squirrels to take over power, reckon they'd be better than most politicians.
