Words alone cannot do justice to the wonder that is Romantically Apocalyptic.

That comic almost beat Lackadaisy Cats. The marvelous Captain is now being massively honored by avatarism™.

XKCD, Questionable Content, Something Positive, Anders Loves Maria, Dominic Deegan and Cyanide and Happiness are the ones I usually keep up with.

I imagine knowledge of such distinction would bring a smile to the Captain's radiation-scarred visage!

Agreed. Easily the best web comic out there right now.

That was NOT a good webcomic. The art is bloody top notch, no doubt. But the writing is absolutely atrocious and reeks of stale humor.

I disagree.

The art is boring and flat, and they re-use the same art over and over again. The panels are NOT dynamic, and it completely defeats the whole point of making sequential art.

The colors are terrible, the background looks pasted in and the writing is god-awful.

So yeah...not so much the "best webcomic" available, especially when there's so much amazing stuff out there.

Actually, I take back my original statement about the art being good. Clearly, it's a photograph of a couple of dudes in a costume and then ran through the photoshop cutout filter to reduce the colors and then grayscaled. I can do a strip exactly like this in less than 20 mins.

I take it all back even more. I just pulled off Romantically Apocalyptic art in less than 2 minutes of effort. These guys don't deserve to be treated as awesome web artists.

I mean seriously, compare it to the art in Lookouts or Copper or Girl Genius.

There's NO comparison.

Man, now I'm all pissed-off.

Maybe I should start drawing The Life Quixotic again.

Also: someone tell that douche talking to the captain to take off his North Face cold-weather Shell.

It's fucking with my suspension of disbelief.

Yeah, Romantically Apocalyptic is just artistically lazy. If they do indeed put a whole lot of effort into it, it doesn't show, especially with the resources they have. There's no excuse for it to be that bad.

Okay, side by side

First look at Copper, Do you notice how everything looks like it fits together? Even when the art style changes and Copper and Fred are put into graffiti, they seem to be a part of the same world. Notice how nicely your eye flows from panel to panel? Notice how the composition itself helps to tell the story? Notice how, even though these are still images, the art feels dynamic. It feels like the whole comic is moving. It feels like time is passing.

Now Look at RA. It actually HURTS to look at. Your eyes are bombarded with blacks and grays and what little white there is pulls the eye so strongly because everything is so goddamn dark.

Notice how you can only look at one panel at once? Notice how everything is so static? How hard it is to read the dialogue? Notice how there's NO panel composition, just one still image after the other? Even when they're re-using the same image it feels unrelated to everything else.

There's no movement in these panels, and what little sense of time and placement there is seems clunky at best.

This is the work of a photographer and a photoshop painter. These guys have no idea how to do a comic.

All these seem amusing, but is no one a Cyanide and Happiness fan?

The Abominable Charles Christopher

This delightcul comic took me a few pages to acclimate myself, but it soon developed into a wonderful thing. Beautifully-drawn, cleverly-written, and an intriguing plot. No digital photograph manipulation to grouse about here!

I read the whole thing, what an emotional roller coaster. Its hilarious one page, and the next page can make you cry. Well, I cried. The story of Vivol and Moon Bear is particularly tear inducing.

Reminds me of the book The Gnole, which I really liked as a kid but I`m pretty sure its out of print so I can`t really recommend it. Bah.
