Sewing Your Own Clothes

I have recently gained an interest in sewing and I'm defiantly no fashion designer. I have searched all over the Internet for clothing layouts and ideas which I've been unsuccessful with both. For any of you who design and sew your own clothes or know of websites that give the above, could you give me a hand? It would be greatly appreciated.

There are a few easy projects you could try, like sewing a kimono/ cape/ one- piece dress. I remember my very first project was a costume for the first viewing of Lord of the Rings, and since I had only two days to do it, I made this one- piece dress with elven- style arms. Just try googling for "sewing for newbies" or something, and you're bound to come up with something. Alternately, there are some links in the fashion section of the goth.net forums you could have a look at, aswell as a thread with easy projects.

I agree with Minyaliel, a cape would be a simple project to begin with. What type of cloth should I use? Velvet?

It's rather hard working with velvet, especially thick velvet, and it's expensive. Which means, if you mess up, you've wasted a lot of money. To start off with, I'd probably choose some black wool fabric and then, to avoid itching, use a second layer underneath of muslin or something similar. Only a suggestion, though.

I've always wanted to sew fancy things, but I keep putting off learning sewing. I'll have to get around to it on the holidays perhaps.

Also, I've seen some nice patterns on the internet.

Could I have the links to those patterns? I've looked all over the place, and I can't find anything.

If you're just starting, hemming may be an easy step toward sewing. My first sewing project a few days ago was taking an old, long-sleeve, black, button-up and sewing white lace on the cuffs and collar and replacing the buttons. It's a wonderful success and a very essential learning experience, aswell.

Wow, thanks for sharing! I've bookmarked them already.

We should get a thread for DIY/ crafts related sites... I'll go ahead and make it.

the dollar a yard table at walmart (I know, I know) can yield good results from time to time. I've found good deals there occasionally, and if you look after holidays sometimes you can find fabric for .50 a yard, not to mention second hand options. this is good for trying out that new pattern, and fitting it, if not the final project. I have found several types of quality and interesting fabric this way.

I got some beautiful fabric at Wal-Mart last week -- a dark green satin-like material, and a green and black lace. I'm planning on making a vest, though I got so much of the lace I could probably make a skirt with what's left over. And I went back to Wal-Mart today and bought some silver and neon fabric paint for a cyberish skirt I'm working on.

I don't have a problem with those who do shop there.

I'm just voting with my money. I don't agree with their business ethics.

Challenge yourself in the patternmaking area and the rest is easy. I took 2 patternmaking classes and it all made sense how these patterns were made according to a design in pattern catalogs.
Better yet, you can use any simiular pattern as a template and then alter some features to your liking.
FIRST!! make copies of your patterns with newsprint paper so that way if a "failed experiment" happens, the pattern is not wasted and can be used to try again.

Hi, my name is Heather and i'm new to the boards. I was browsing and i found this one and thought that i should add something. Sewing your own clothes is a good cost effective way to look good, guaruntee a good fit, and originality.
Honestly, as embarrassing as this is, my mom made my cape. Its floor length (i'm 5'7") about 67 inches long. Its black cordaroy(SP?) and lined with dragons and flames [will post soon]. It has a huge floppy hood, but as it stands, its a beautiful cape. She made it in only 3 days and all total cost about 30$, when normally a cape bought at a shop somewhere would run you about 125$+
