Prom

So I just discovered my year at school is having a prom after all. I never thought my school did this but apparently they do, lol.

Anyway, even though I left last year rather than doing a senior year, I'm still invited. And it's a "smart dress" event, so I'm panicking already. D: Only thing is it's not as uber-formal as American proms.

I'm a girl, but I don't want to dress in anything that's actually feminine or masculine. All I have in the way of "smart" clothes right now are my black combat trousers, black shirts & tie, and a couple of black coats, and that combination is slightly too masculine. I'm thinking perhaps a red tartan kilt, although that'd be expensive to hire, and my mum thinks I'll just look daft and feel uncomfortable in it. Plus it's traditionally a men's formal garment.

Can you folks give me some ideas of smart & elegant dark gothic-flavoured clothes that I could wear? NO dresses please. I'm wide open to ideas that involve customising other garments.

Poet shirt, black or burgundy trousers and waistcoat come to my mind. Would that be too masculine? Yeah, I thought so.

I love the kilt idea. It would look great wih black shirt.

Hmm... let's see, what about a top hat, white shirt, black jacket (formal style) and a funky skirt or pants? oh, and of course, a pair of funky boots. Especially if you're wearing a skirt.

What comes to mind:

(I must admit I'd probably wearing something like this: http://www.nightmarefactory.com/DG4811.jpg *drool*)

Damn that five minutes limit... You could also drop the white shirt and use a corset underneath instead.

Edit: Persephone is right, as usual

I never went to my prom. I saw no reason. They say it's a "last good-bye" to the people you went to school with, but I never cared for them, so saying a "last" good-bye was just about as usefull as a "first" good-bye, which never occured. Besides, despite the fact that I never went to mine, I've attended four proms, and they've always turned into popularity contests. Pure crap, as far as I'm concerned.

Senior Prank, on the other hand...

If you must go, however, go with something like what Minyaliel suggested in her second link up there. That's just lovely.

My brother did that. He took the money he would've spent on the whole stupid thing, and went drinking with his mates.

I went to my own, because i didn’t want to leave my best mate on her own in that situation. Preppies and cheerleaders are always on their worst behavior. I went to the others because it was an excuse to get liquored up, underage...thank god i grew up!

I didn't even do that. I didn't have my first drink until 2 years after I left high-school. Aside from the time I found the Southern Comfort my grandfather had hidden away... I just went to see a movie with some friends.

I love the poet shirt idea, actually. A black or dirty white poet shirt with lace-up collar rather than cravatte would be a treat. Waistcoat might be a bit much though.

Trousers are tricky though. :-/ I don't really want to go wearing combat trousers, and I don't want to wear a skirt or dress...

Can't you borrow trousers from a friend or someone just for that night? Or have them made?

Long A-line or gored skirt would look great too, but if you don't want to wear a skirt...
