Bela Lugosi's Dead

Ok, peoples. We're doing a music analysis paper, and I chose to write about Bela Lugosi's Dead. I have a few ideas. This is my outline:

Outline (not exactly in order) Bela Lugosi’s Dead by Bauhaus
I. Interesting intro
II. What the lyrics mean (big part on “undead undead undead”)
III. About Bela Lugosi
IV. About Dracula
V. Bauhaus as the “Godfathers of Goth Rock.”
VI. The bat cave
VII. David J. (bassist, wrote most of the lyrics, including Bela Lugosi’s dead)
VIII. The sound (the music itself)
IX. Electric hellfire club version
X. Nouvelle Vague version

Is there anything you think I should add?

I think writing about Duckmans beard would gain you extra marks if anything.

Or at least it would if I was marking it.....

Someone should seriously write an essay about Duckman, just for the lulz

III. About Bela Lugosi
IV. About Dracula

It's not really so much about Dracula. It is about Bela Lugosi, the man who originally played Dracula. You see Dracula is a fictional
character. Bela Lugosi is a flesh and blood man that can dye. Bela was otherwise alienated for playing Dracula, but it's only a part. If you want to get a good grade, I'd listen to the lyrics again and think about that a lot.

V. Bauhaus as the “Godfathers of Goth Rock.”

The Bau Haus is also a design school in Germany that combines beauty and function into one form. Bauhaus is a very political and subversive band that was against the cold war, war and government/social oppression in the 70's ad 80's.

VI. The bat cave
VII. David J. (bassist, wrote most of the lyrics, including Bela Lugosi’s dead)

David J. was also in Time Zone and wrote a song against the Red Tide of Communism, condemning people for not voting and therefore allowing socialism to rise again.

VIII. The sound (the music itself)

Daniel Ash is a creative thinker and mostly responsible for the sound. He was always pushing the edge and trying to create something new.

IX. Electric hellfire club version
X. Nouvelle Vague version

Is there anything you think I should add?

ELECTRIC HELLFIRE CLUB? What do you plan to say about them? Personally I wouldn't include anything about other band's covers of the song. But if you feel the need their have been other more interesting covers done by other more interesting bands.

While "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is a great song, I think it would be a difficult one to right any sort of lengthy analysis on as it lacks very much depth. It's a dub-influenced song with scratchy guitar improvisation and lyrics that lampoon B vampire movies.

you're probably right. I tried to force it though. I was thinking I could do Ziggy Stardust... but I don't know. I"m almost sick of it because my friend and I performed it once, and we practiced it like hell.

Well, if you do decide on analyzing Bela Lugosi's Dead you should also include a section on it's influence on the gothic subculture.

I only heard this awesome song fairly recently and it has to be one of the earliest and best gothic rock song of the first wave. The intro is indeed class an errie style of drumming and excellent guitars throughout.

Some of favourite lyrics are:

"The virginal brides file past his tomb
Strewn with time's dead flowers
Bereft in deathly bloom
Alone in a darkened room
The count
"
