I've hinted about this in another thread. I get quite annoyed when the things I like suddenly get "trendy" and, eventually, categorized under some stereotype. It might be because I don't like being limited to that "one" definition. For instance, I've held a fascination for vampires before the masses thought they were fashionable. After (here it comes) "Twilight" I generally avoid mention of vampires when in the company of people who might get the impression that I am into the saga or whatever preconceived notions they might have of people who read the books. That's just one. I can't think of any other at the moment.

It did. I lost my fascination of vampires after Twilight came out. I very much enjoy the film Interview with the Vampire, however, and one night last year when I was in my dorm alone and bored I decided to watch it, and some guy IMed me asking what I was up to, to which I replied I was about to watch the movie, and he replied something along the lines of "how typical of you." He was the type to judge me based on my black clothes and my "gothic ways."
I grew up enjoying Nightmare Before Christmas as a child, but when it became trendy I grew quiet about my love of the movie. My sister, who hated the movie as a child, is now a fangirl of it because she's involved with the scene/emo subculture. It annoys me.
So yes, I can certainly relate to disassociating with certain things because of their sudden trendiness within subcultures I do not want to be affiliated with. I don't fully disassociate, though, but I do so on a social level.

I just want to say that some of these posts in particular have been used in my paper thus far, and it has pushed me to the edge of reaching the 4th page of a paper that should be 5-6 pages long. Hurray, I can focus less on the topics I know less about! Or the topics I chose as bubbly fillers before I considered stereotype threat a concept to focus on. Of course, I did cheat in the sense I used a few direct posts that, together, probably take up 3/4 of a page. I've no complaints about that.

Instead of not talking about things you like, how about you just stop giving a shit about it?

Personally, I don't find it necessary to 'not give a shit' about things I like just because they have become a current fad. I tend to lose interest and, yes, disassociate but forgetting all about it entirely would usually be my last and final resort. Oftentimes, it's better to just watch and wait until the hype dies down and people rave over a new 'trend'. They almost always do, anyway.

Good work, then. I was wondering if you could perhaps allow me to read the final paper? I'm intrigued by this issue and how you worked up everything (from the posts here) to the entire topic as a whole.

On topic:
I'm very conscious of the fact that the majority of my wardrobe come from Hot Topic, and this bothers me because it is perceived as 'poseur' within the Gothic community. To counter this, I have done two things:
1. Begun the long journey to creating my own clothing and style, as I see it in my head and not as it is presented to me in a store;
2. Made a concerted effort to learn about gothic music in its various forms and see if any of it appealed to me. I come from metal, nu-metal, folk, punk, and rock roots with a bunch of other random bits thrown in there as well, so goth music was new to me; yet I found that after listening to some bands for a while, they really began to grow on me and now I consider them among my favorites.
I'm still hesitant to call myself 'goth.' I wouldn't call myself a metalhead or a punk or any other dumb label; I just like art and music in many of its forms.
One thing that bothers me greatly is when people ask if I am emo. It bothers me because I don't identify with the emo culture, I only like a little bit of their music, and it betrays the other person's ignorance about subcultures. It's like if someone were to say, 'meh all Asians look alike,' it would be very offensive.
The last thing I get a lot of from some mundanes are snarky comments, the most common of which is, "Is it halloween already?" I usually reply, "It's always halloween in my world," because this gets a laugh, is so stereotypical that no one could possibly take the comment seriously and shows the other person that I'm just a regular guy.
I hope some of this is helpful for your project thingy.

Being called emo may also bother you because of the negative connotations with the word. That's what I presume is also going on, anyway. Unfortunately, a lot of the scene fashion can be mistaken for being goth fashion by outsiders.
I don't know about you guys, but I find that doing Google image searches for "goth" can be very amusing.

Good Heavens! Those are some very, ah, interesting images to start the morning with. It seems that the first photo was taken more than three years ago. I cannot help but wonder if their appearance has changed since then.

Pyre: The first pic looks more like they just came from a heavy metal concert rather than anything Goth-related. The second one is a little more fun in a Gothy way. XD

About Nightmare Before Christmas: I hope the merch for it dies down soon. While I agree it's a pretty fun movie, I tend to get annoyed if I see merch for the same thing everywhere I go. -_-;;
By comparison, I like Corpse Bride much better, but one can hardly find merch for it anywhere, even online.

Jack: Heh heh. I love that pic. XD I'm tempted to make it my icon, but I don't want folks to think that's me.

Probably because Nightmare Before Christmas is widely more accepted as amazing and on the flip side Corpse Bride is widely more accepted as fail...

What of it?
I listen to HIM, wear Hot Topic shit, and watched the Twilight movie and I had discovered goth rock and decided it was gay before you hit puberty.
Fuck off with your elitist bullshit if you're just going to be elitist about the music you listen to.

I have to admit, that was pretty funny. I'm no elitist, though. Hardly, at least.

Yeah, it's agreed I'm one of the funniest among the people I know.
PS--I notice you sort of trying to come at me.
This is going to end in you being hurt, and leaving the forums again.
Just a warning.
