I shouldn't.. but yes, coffee for me!

Nothing interesting planned here. I'm spending Xmas day with a friend and her family.

I did bake a chocolate cake. Two in fact. But the packet mix turned out tiny and the big glorious scratch cake I then made leaked out of the goddamn spring tin inside the oven.

Will be frosting the skinny cake to take tomorrow... Throwing that tin away and getting a real one. FFS

There's nothing quite like a holiday baking adventure. I ended up making come cookies. My first "batch" I put too much liquidy stuff and butter in them so I ended up with one giant super-cookie. Our xmas went well, it was full of good cheer and food.

My Xmas was excellent as well. Drank imported beer, had a beef rib roast (an old recipe my mom picked up from their neighbors when my parents lived in the U.K.) and spent time with a few old friends I hadn't seen in years. It was hilarious Skyping with my cousin who's stationed in South Korea right now, since we were throwing the same lingo at each other and the rest of the family was looking at us going, "WTF are you two talking about?"

Beer and yummy beef roast? sounds AWESOME!

I got lots and lots of books so I've been reading them, it's really cut into my "fucking around online" time.

That's not a bad thing at all. It's like cake and icecream, why not have both?

It was truly tasty and worth it, even if it's just a once a year thing. Ape, that reminds me, I should read some more. I haven't picked up any new books, but I have quite the little library for myself.

I <3 having a library to myself, even if it is kinda smallish. My only complaint is that moving a small library is back-breaking work and have had to remind myself on several occasions that books are to be packed in small boxes.

Given the choice, what book or sort of book have you been in the mood to spring for?

Acharis, I'm working on doing both, its just when I crack a new book all I want to do is read...for days, you don't want to know what my house looks like at this point.

I don't know. XD At the moment I'm reading Christopher Hitchens "Love, Poverty and War, Journeys and Essays" but it's bedtime reading. Far to often I'll open a book, read a few pages and find that I'm not in the mood for it. For instance, before the current book, I opened up my copy of Dracula's biography and after a few chapters, decided to read some Sam Harris and Hitchens instead.

Hitches *shudder* I'm sure he has a few valid points here and there at least. Of course I should probably read his stuff before I'm too terribly critical.

Mind you, I'm reading Bram Stokers Dracula.. for the first time.

Hows your new year my dear, dear Tree-house bud? I wonder about your well being probably more than is good for me.

*blushes* awe, why thank you! It's going well. Just got home from work and I'm having a White Russian or two

He does bring up some interesting points actually. Some of it's dry British humor ("I Fought the Law in Bloomberg's New York," "Martha, Inc.") and others have valid points that I've noticed aren't often included in the discussion. For instance, when in "Scenes From an Execution" where after attending an execution he mentioned that even after being in numerous war zones over the years, he was disgusted at what he witnessed and that state executions are nothing more than a tragic lottery for the poor. There's also when he took the famous Route 66 from Chicago to L.A., and he mentioned in the end that the U.S. is/was starting to become cookie cutter across the board.

And don't worry about being late reading Bram Stoker's "Dracula." I tried reading it once, and I grew terribly bored with the mundane, day to day stuff of the characters. For my money, I'd rather read Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein." Makes me wonder if I should look up some of the other old classics.

*waves* Hello *kisses everyone on the cheek* Happy new year!!!

So sorry I'm late. Oh boy, have I had an interesting few weeks. Managed to get myself a dose of bad sunburn whilst down the coast for a few days mid December, then, we were going around friend's house for xmas lunch, with another friend cooking - turned into us doing it all at our house. Only found out a week before xmas, so I wasn't really prepared for it.

Ape What books did you get sweetie?
I love books. My best job ever was working stacking shelves in a bookstore. Pay was crap, but the job... I was the slowest stacker ever, as I'd look at the books, and read the backs whilst no one was looking...

BATTY!! *hugs and kisses* I got a ton of books (mostly public domain stuff) so they were free.

BB, I plan on re-reading Frankenstein here one of these days soon. I read it when I was a kid and LOVED it. I think I may have to go back over the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes one of these days. When I was a kid at home I used to read a LOT. I'm thinkin' I'll pick the regular habit back up.

I managed to survive New Year's... ended up having a couple drinks, my Mrs. kept me from drunk texting, so luckily I didn't have to wake up to some sort of horrible mess. Right now, watching some Star Trek... could have swore I heard the Tardis in the background at one point LOL. I'm trying to figure out what it means when my sci-fi shows start melting together like that.

I survived New Year's as well, kept a tally of my beverages and made sure to go to bed when the sun rose over the horizon I think after "The Raven" with John Cusack I'm going to go to bed myself, work was pretty rough tonight.

Man, I friggin LOVE movies. My only complaint about the Sherlock Holmes movie was the overdone violence. I mean, I'm glad they put some action into it, but damn.

Netflix is ok for the most part, it is frustrating that they end up dropping a lot of their content as they pick up new stuff. Mind you, this is coming from a person who is allergic to change.

Beautiful Ape: I love project gutenburg. It's awesome that you can download for free some of the older books.

Hope you all in the US are keeping warm.

I know what you mean. I've seen enough of the real stuff to flinch whenever I see it done properly on film. Because of this, I'm not a big fan of what I've personally termed "Goreporn" a'la "Saw" and "Hostel" anthologies.

It's funny you brought that up about Netflix though. Because this is the one reason I haven't become a subscriber:

Then again, this is why I prefer books. Aside from editor being the most uptight person you can think of, the core of the story remains intact.

Don't worry Fruity, I live in south Texas, and from what I've experienced so far, Spring might come a little early for us North Hemisphere folks

Of course, that's my opinion, I could be wrong

*hugs* for you too, Batty!

The weather where I'm living is acting schizo now. Cold at night (for Texas anyway) and warm during the day. I honestly haven't felt weather like this since I was stationed in Colorado with 30's and 40's in the evenings with temps going into the 60's and 70's.

Y'all should move here, it's pretty much warm and sunny with just a slight breeze every day. Oh and about once a week for just about a minute it rains this impossibly fine mist with the sun still shining brightly so there are tons of absolutely stunning rainbows!

Sounds tempting, but I've always been one for snow capped mountains and pine trees

I could go for a gentle breeze and tons of rainbows. Mind you, it will be spring-ish soon enough, just have to get over mid-winter and we'll be golden. Then we get to watch it snow and freeze all spring till may and we can finally plant our gardens, cross our fingers hoping it has enough time to grow and doesn't freeze again too soon. It's exciting.

I'm tempted to start a garden, but the ground here's so infertile in the city plus the numerous droughts we've had in the last five years has made water conservation a top concern for the local water company. Maybe I should look into vegetables that can grow in desert climates.
