TLZ, an introduction.

First of I have to say I'm not natively english-speaking nor writing, so my english isn't that good. I'l try to do my best off course. And I'll not going to be offended if anyone corrects me. (How else am I going to get better?) Hopefully my language is understandable. =)

1. I'm going to school/studying. I guess what I'm going in norway could be transelated to something like "Junior High School"(or something like that, it differs a good deal from english school-systems anyway.) Here I study media-communication and other more general subjects such as language, math, history, etc...

2. I hail from the western coast of Norway. More speficly to a little shithole called "Ølen"(witch oddly enough sound like "The Beer" in Norwegian.) It's an hour from the city of Haugesund. Next year I'm hopefully moving to Bergen(or nearby).

3. First of I have to admit that I actually don't read much. My focus/concentraton-problems makes it hard. However, I've managed to get through some of Paulo Coelho's books and I completely love it.

4. I like the french-japanse movie Stupeur et Tremblements(Fear and Trembling), I Am Dina, The Matrix Trilogy, A Beautiful Mind, Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie(Amelie of Montmartre), V for Vendetta, Edward Scissorhands, Moulin Rouge, Batman Begings

5. Hmm, maybe Lacuna Coil's rendition of Enjoy The Silence

6. Dream Theater - Pull Me Under

7. Dying (directly of indirectly) from an orgasm when making having sex with the love of my life.

8. Hmm, haven't thought of this before. Black with classic loook.

9. My greyish outwashed jeans with my striking red in-flames t-shirt and sweater-thing. (My clothing-vocalubary isn't very good, espescially not in english.) Not very gothic, but I like it. I also like my black coat, not very fany or anything... but I like it.

10. Not having to worry about anything, not having to worry about being accepted, not having to worry about school. I also miss the feeling that everyone accepted me for what I was and I didn't need to hide any parts of myself.

11. I love so many bands. I have to mention only ONE band it would have to be System of a Down. Much because they're the band that got me into music in the first place. But I also like: Opeth, Arcturus, Lacuna Coil, Emperor, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Björk, Spiral Architect, Stream of Passion, Too, A Perfect Circle, Ulver, Dream Theater, Edvard Grieg, Don Davis, Extol, Green Carnation, In Flames, Ishahn, King Crimson, Lamb of God, Massive Attack, Meshuggah, Mastodon, The Mars Volta, Muse, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Peccatum, other more as well.

12. In addiciton to primary school I have 2 years of media-communication. This year I'm going on media and with general subjects as well.

13. By now some of you probably figured out that I'm not actually goth, but more of a metalhead/progger. I registered because I'm simply very curious of the goth culture. I've always been fascinated by it, but never really knew much of it. In autumn I've got a girlfirend that was goth, she introduced me to it in some way(her style of dress, and music like the cure). Since I'm saying I'm only here because I'm interested in your culture I should probably state reasons for this as well. As I said I'm more of a metalhead/progger, but I don't really feel home in any of those subcultures. They're so limiting. Some bands are not approved, some ideas, ways of thinking, style, etc is "wrong" in them. I hate these limits, I don't want anything else than to be myself. But I'm not just a metalheads, or progger. I love to explore music in all directions, same with style. You could maybe say I have a kind of identity-crisis.... Anyway: I've heard that goth is a subculture centered around "being yourself" and that it's not very limiting or "strict". So this basicly made me very curious.

Simply said: I joined to get to know goth better.

14. I don't know if they gave it away or not, but I'm a man. (Although some calls me a girl since they find some of my behaviour quite feminine. Oh well. =)

I'm looking forward to learn about all kinds of stuff here and hope I'll get to know many new people.

Hi, Welcome. I love Nick Cave.
Have a listen to these bands: Bauhaus, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Alien Sex Fiend, Christian Death & Rozz Williams, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, London After Midnight, Mission UK, Cruxshadows, The Birthday Party(Nick Cave was in it), Tones on Tail & Fields of Nephilim. These hopefully will help you get to know goth better musically.

Your english is quite good.

I also really enjoy Coctuea Twin's album Treusure. I've also listened a bit to a Joy Division Best-Of CD, quite a good deal of this too. Cruxshadows I just heard a few songs yeasterday. Not sure what I think about them yet.

You can also listen to Clan of Xymox, or Echo and the Bunnymen.
I love Lacuna Coil too. (A Current Obsession, Cold Heritage, Wave of Anguish, Humane, Swamped, Heir to the Dying Day are my favorite tracks by them).

Welcome.

Anybody who apologizes for not speaking English well and uses "shithole" to describe their hometown in the same post is okay by me.

Goth is certainly centered around "being yourself", but at the same time if being yourself is antithesis to what goth is about, chances are you won't be welcome around goths. For example: a homophobic person could never be a goth. They could pretend to be, but it would be a lie: one of the main aspects of the subculture is an acceptance of gender ambiguity and alternative sexuality. So unless they changed their mindset about that, they would always be an outsider. And that's a fact.

Another example: someone who likes to be violent would not be tolerated. Goths aren't hippies, but violence is not an aspect of the goth subculture, and should only be used when deemed absolutely necessary. This is one big reason why school shooters would never be considered goths.

Racism and sexism are also antithesis to what goth is, and so these things are not welcome either. Anyone who doesn't realize that the goth subculture exists in part to get away from this kind of mentality just doesn't get it.

As far as music goes, it's related to mindset more than anything else, and though music plays a part in the subculture, it's generally the mindset that determines the music. Goths can listen to anything they want, and generally they do, but there are a lot of common bands that appeal to goths in particular. If one listens only to metal or rap for example, chances are they don't have the mindset that goths do.

In short, though goth as a subculture doesn't have any real "rules" as such, the fact remains that if you aren't naturally drawn to it then you don't really belong. And if you are truly of a similar mindset, then you're already there and you just don't know it yet!

TLZ! I don't care that you have a girlfriend; you are Norwegian and I request pictures. NOW.
Welcome to the boards.
Do you prefer old Ulver or new Ulver?

Woah! Thanks for warm welcome, appriciated.

SKot: Great. I think I understand more of it now. (Don't think I'll ever understand goth completely, but that's not the point, is it?) Goth seems to represent some of my values I hold most dear. Tolerance is something I hold extremely high. I hate racism, I hate sexism, or kinds of intoleranse towards things that doesen't do damage. (However, I don't think such as violence should be tolerated.) I definitly respect gender ambiguity and alternative sexuality, and other kinds of "weird" things. I find myself fascinated by alot of "gothic" stuff; so I guess you're right.

I really like that goth is so openminded. F.ex. among most people I feel that I need to hide certain aspects about myself, but it these things seems to be very accepted among goths. I feel I can be completely open about stuff like that hear, without fear of condemnation.

Pyre: I don't have any recent pictures of me. Maybe I'll post some old ones. (by the way, where should such be posted?). And another thing, what is it with metalhead or goth-women outside Norway and norwegians?

I've only got Ulver's album Blood Inside. But I've heard some of their older stuff, kinda like but... but I haven't bought anything of it yet. I really like their album Bergtatt, but haven't bought it yet. (The acoustic work "Kveldssanger" also is nice.... damn I need to get some Ulver).

Sounds like you'll find some like-minded people in the subculture for sure, then. And you've already mentioned you enjoy at least some of the music many of us enjoy, so there's another common ground. Do remember, though, that there's at least as many clueless newbies here who have no idea what goth is about as there are clued-in people, as evidenced by the Introduction section. Some of the newbies are intelligent enough to get a clue, and some are downright stupid and belligerent. Don't let the stupid and belligerent ones put you off. As I've said before, even finding only 5% of the goth subculture to be intelligent and interesting to me is enough to make me prefer their company over the rest of the world that isn't.

It's funny, because a lot of people think goths are very close-minded, and don't like anything that's "not goth". In fact, I find that the truly well-adjusted goths are very open-minded, and though their main interests may be goth-related, they often enjoy many things outside that realm without the fear of being looked down upon by other goths for doing something *GASP* 'Ungoth'! And that's not to say that some won't look down on them for that (there's always a few pricks out there), but that they have no fear because they don't care what those people think.

If you feel comfortable around goths, it's quite likely that you are one yourself, inside. And it's a great thing to find others you can be comfortable around. It's not about conformity, it's about finding kindred spirits.

What? We can't love our Norwegians to death? On average, a lot of good metal music comes from the region, and I love the look of Scandinavians. I am a Viking fangirl, one might put it. I particularly have a thing for guys with long hair. Mmm. . .

Though your account has been around since 2004, do you think you could please make an intro thread to let those of us who are newer to this site get to know more about you? The oldbies might not even know you well if you have only four posts to account for. . . So, it will be good for everyone. Thank you

If people on this site are in any way perceptive they could learn about me from posts that I may make, not just from a prescribed formulaic introduction format. You must have better things to do than find people who haven't made an intro post and police them, although I see you must not since I am not your only target.
Thank you for so clearly reminding me why I have only made 4 posts on this forum. Every year or so I come back by, hoping that things are less ridiculously structured and every year I see that someone still wants to parent and control others.
It's unnecessary and unpleasant. Ciao.

Wow. I sense bitch.
I made a point of saying something about it because I did not recognize your name, and did not find an intro thread about you to tell me who you are.
And if you read the rules of the forum, you would find stated that to truly be part of this forum you must create an intro.
Regardless, I don't like you, so I couldn't care less whether you stay or go. I prefer the latter, lest you readjust your attitude.

Rapture: You should be happy this place is moderated. I'll bet it'll be filled with posers(that brags about how deep their cuts are and thinks it makes them goth), troll(that just talk stupid) and other no-fun people. Some structure is ok I would say. Besides, other than the Introductions-thread this forum isn't really that moderated. (At lesat compared to forums I've been at.)

Frankscott: Cool! Yeah, I know... it's not a very well known band. Espescially here in Norway(or probably Europe in general). You've seen the live? You lucky bastard, they seem great!
