Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

So what is your favourite genre?
Please no genre fights (thats goth, no its metal, no its goth, no actually its folk-metal... ...whatever) I do not believe in labeling music, "genres" are there so you can ROUGHLY CATEGORIZE what you are talking about
----
My list
1. Avant-garde (Diamanda Galás)
2. Electro-industrial (Hocico)
3. Post-punk (Joy Division, Gene Loves Jezebel, The Danse Society, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Alien Sex Fiend)
4. Medieval rock (Corvus Corax)
5. Ballad (Billie Holiday)
6. Pop (Leonard Cohen)
7. Industrial rock (Nine Inch Nails)
8. Gothic rock (Children on Stun, Screaming Dead)
9. Rock (Alice Cooper)
10. Folk-metal (LUMSK)
11. Noise rock (The Locust)
12. R&B (Ray Charles)
13. Synth rock (Apoptygma Berzerk)
14. Goth (Sunglasses After Dark)
15. Delta blues (David Honeyboy Edwards, Skip James)
16. Blues (Mance Lipscomb)
17. Celtic (Skilda, Máire Brennan, Clannad)
18. Soul (Marvin Gaye)
19. Hip hop (Cage)
----
So those are my absolute favourite genres and musicians, yeah, yeah, really long, stupid, annoying, over-detailed list, but that's the kinda girl I am

You don't believe in labeling music yet to do so anyway? Labels are for categorizing music and thats just what you did...CONFUSION...

On top of that, it's impossible for the most part to not label. We use labels for comparisons. For example, Death Rock and Goth Rock are not the same thing. Most of us know the difference (I can hear it, but don't quite know it yet).
Lately, my favorite genres seem to be Indie and whatever Tom Waits and Nick Cave constitute.

I think Tom Waits constitutes his own genre.

Deathrock and goth rock sounds different?
Gimmie something to compare to. Virgin Prunes and Christian Death? I suppose Prunes sounds a bit more wavy while CD sounds a bit more punk.

Err, they're more or less the same thing. Goth Rock was more in the immediate aftermath of UK Punk, while Deathrock kinda revolved around the LA Punk scene and then the Batcave later on.

That much I know. So if they're essentially the same thing, then isn't it just conducive to region?

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Just TRY to differentiate between the sound of first-wave gothic rock, and the sound of deathrock. Anyway, my list is a no-brainer.
1.Gothic Rock
2.Post-punk
3.Sludge/Stoner Metal
4.Ambient
5.Trip-hop
6.Southern Rock
7.New Wave

Yeah, and also I suppose Goth Rock tends more towards arty and poetic while Deathrock tends more towards a hardcore edge and kitsch horror movie themes.
I've heard it put this way: Goth Rock is to vampires as Deathrock is to zombies.
But it all comes from Punk.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Leave it to the Brits to write poetry, leave it to the Yanks to write prose.

Goth and Drone are my absolute favourite....but the others are in no particular order because they're all awesome.
If you think about America and Britain...you can see why the goth subculture took a slightly different direction in each. Totally makes sense.
1. Goth (obviously)
2. Drone Doom (MOSS! I worship thee!)
3. Darkwave
4. Dark Ambient
5. 80's pop (Damn F*cking straight!)
6. Deathrock
7. Depressive Black Metal
8. Shoegaze
9. Industrial
10. Techno

Well from what I've heard, neither country had knowledge of the other's developing dark culture when they were developing their own. I mean, Christian Death, 45 Grave, etc. all developed their style in the US at roughly the exact same time as Bauhaus, Siouxsie, etc. developed theirs in the UK, and I know that CD stated they never knew about the whole goth thing in the UK until years after. I think it's more of a matter of culture difference.

I am surprised that no one mentioned electro-goth, such as VNV Nation.
Or am I mixing up my genres?
