Him

The kiss sweetest
And touch so warm

The smile kindest
In this world so cold and strong...

The arms safest
And words all good

The faith deepest
In this world so cold and so cruel...

My gosh! why do I like this band so much???

HIM's music has about as much value as a 60's novelty Halloween songs like "Monster Mash".

I don't think their lyrics are cheezy.
It's just that not everyone can connect.

They're one of those bands that people only listen to because Bam Margera tells them to.

LOL...I didn't even know what that was. I dunno--I am a child of the eighties, so they have a similar sensibility that appeals to me and I so will be going to their concert in NOVEMBER baby whoo hooo!

I will say in defense of HIM, as a dark rock band, they're pretty good. But they're not a goth rock band. Pffftt... I liked a lot of their songs, but there's only so many ways you can say "death" and "I love you".

They got repetative really fucking fast.

I listen to them because I like them. I just like the way the stuff sounds.

I'm hoping the show in December is better than the ones I have been to previously, since Valo was almost always pissed, and verbally incoherant
when not singing. Still fun though.

I guess the thing is not to take it too seriously. Yes, the videos are chock full of gravestnes and Ville looking delectable in some form, and they do often play on the goth stereotype I agree, but you just need to take it all with a pinch of salt I think. And I do.

I will be waiting with a laugh for the first kid to suggest they are a goth band.

Though definitely not a goth band, I'm okay with them. They're something you can listen to when you're in a cheesy mood.

*Jaw hits floor* 170 POUNDS ?!?! Holy shit. That translates to what, 340 Canadian Dollars. I don't even think front row when the Rolling Stones came through was that expensive. The most I've paid for a concert was $140 CAD. Your friend is an idiot.

170 quid for a ticket to anything , let alone HIM is fucking ridiculous. Did he buy it from a tout by any chance? or on ebay? Because he was seriously fucked over there. The most I have ever paid is 21 quid, and only then because of the postage.

I think my ticket for the forthcoming December show was....yep, 18 quid.

Hahaha, I'm not exactly sure what he did to get it, but he knew what he was doing and was THAT desperate to see them.

He is suitably embarrassed now about it, and I very much doubt he'd do it again.....if he knows whats good for him.

I think you mean this as an insult but I think it's actually apt. Cheesy B-level stuff is fun if you take it for what it is. It's when people start taking it seriously as high art that they look stupid. It's like me trying to argue that Hammer horror films are cinematic masterpieces. That would show a lack of knowledge about cinema as well as a certain low taste level. Music appreciation really isn't that much different.

Some HIM lyrics:

In our diabolikal rapture we live on and on
And death keeps knocking at our door
So we open the door
And we die a bit more
We're in love with death and we die on and on

"We die on and on" doesn't even make sense. This was the 5th song I looked at with lyrics that involved love, tears, sex, and death. Pretty melodramatic, if not outright cheesy.

And today we'll drown in your tears
A drop of your blood tastes like wine today

Ok, definitely cliche and melodramatic, and arguably cheese.

In the grace of your love I writhe in pain
In 666 ways I love you and I hope you feel the same

Ok, if that isn't the textbook definition of cheese, I don't know what is!

I have nothing against HIM, but like I said before, calling him "deep" is like calling Hammer horror movies "deep."

Lots, if not most, goth music is melodramatic, but we all look the other way. What's different here?

That it's being taken so seriously, that the fans are so die hard. There are so many goth bands I make fun of for their cheesy/melodramatic/nonsensical lyrics - the Mission, Nosferatu, Inkubus Sukkubus, 45 Grave, Peter Murphy, etc. All of these acts, including HIM, have their merits, but having deep or insightful lyrics is not one of them.

The main difference being that most goth melodrama is more interesting/varied/amusing than HIM. HIM have one song formula and that's about it.

Although I did quite enjoy their cover of Wicked Game. But then again I liked the original.
