Ankhs...
Here's a quick question - I did a quick skim of the forums, couldn't find much info and I'm too lazy to goooooooogle it.
How did the Ankh factor in to gothic streetware? I'm no expert on goth culture, although I try to learn whenever possible, and I've had no social blunders so far - but I suddenly thought about this question. I've seen lots of ankhs on people over the years, not entirely sure where the idea came from, how long it's been about and the significance if any.
Would be good to get some answers from the community, methinks.

Well the Ankh is generally considered a symbol of life, but it is often featured on egyptian coffins/sarcophagi. Many egyptian gods and goddesses are depicted with an ankh also.
I think maybe the popular fashion for egyptian/Cleopatra style makeup, ( Siouxsie was a fan for a while ) and the life/death connection of the Ankh may have something to do with it.
Either that or someone decided it looked great and then everyone else copied it.

The Ankh is simply a symbol meaning "life" from Egyptian hieroglyphics. Due to its meaning and significance, it's been adopted as a neopagan symbol. Consequentially, it's popular among hippy and goth cultures because of the trend of acceptance of pagan religious beliefs and spirituality among the two groups.
It's not that complicated, really. I mean, there's no specific movement that brought the Ankh's popularity to a new height or anything - there's just a trend among goths to be interested in the things it's associated with. The End. :3

I have no idea how it came to be important in the subculture, but I sure love it. I want an ankh-shaped gravestone.
The fact that the ankh means life is very good to shut up the people that think goth is obsessing about death.

No because I'm in a disagreeable mood tonight and partly because I'm so stoned.

I might as well be stoned. I have blurry vision, my eyes feel big, and scrolling up and down on the forums looks really cool.
^.^
Ankhs are cool. I had a henna tattoo in the shape of an ankh once.

I can't get all that fancy stuff. I guess I'm just lucky to get what I have. I hate dealing with 18-20 year old kids that don't know nothing about the business.

I'm lucky in the respect that I've found a good dealer who can get me exactly what I want, and always has something new. Dude got me an IV and a bag of some magical sleepy time.

I wonder how an ancient symbol can be underrated or overrated...

My guess is that it was first influenced by Siouxsie Sioux's preference for Egyptian-like make-up, then by the inclusion of the Eye of Ra on the Sister of Mercy's Vision Thing cover.
As for it being overrated...over-used and over-represented maybe. I like the symbol so I don't give a shit who likes it and who doesn't.

The ankh had a resurgence as the sigil of Death in the Sandman series. But it had been around for a while before as a "Crucifix alternative" for some and a symbol simply of life in a more encompassing sense than breathing for others. The ankh symbolizes more than just this life.
