Can people stop bringing race into it? If a person is so racist against Mexicans that it colours their thoughts regarding immigration laws, then their opinions aren't really valid in a discussion anyway.
A person can be against illegal immigration without being a racist. The people who are coming over illegally in such large numbers HAPPEN to be Mexican. That doesn't mean a person against this immigration are anti-Mexican.

Ok slightly off topic...regarding flags:
In either case, the party who took down the original nation's flag (whether a Mexican in America or an American in Mexico) would be constituting an act of war. When a national flag is flown on a mast, it is typically there to indicate the nation that controls the ground that the flag is on. In the case of multiple flags flying (such as at a consul or embassy), it is the flag that is being flown highest. Or at least, that is how I understand it.
If a person comes and takes down that nation's flag and replaces it with a different nation's flag, they are then indicating that the new nation has gained control of the land - which technically is an act of war if that land was not given over willingly. So, it is likely to cause upset.

its a fricken flag. We did with a pride flag and a lot of people did this with a Newfoundland republic flag in protest a few years ago. NOTHING HAPPENED. No one got shot with timbit cannons, the mounties did not come over the hills brandishing their scimitars aloft their loyal moose steeds. Nobody got upset. I see other country's flags all the time.
