Dying hair with food coloring?

Have you tried it before? Yay or nay? Should I try it for the hell of it?

I don't know about food coloring, but sugar-free kool-aid has food coloring in it, and people have been using kool-aid for hair at least since the 80's for temporary color.

If your hair is too dark for kool-aid then I doubt that straight up food coloring is going to do much.

Yeah. Solumina is right. You have to lighten/bleach your hair for brighter colors to be, well, bright. Food coloring is a stain, like regular temporary hair coloring. It doesn't need a developer but it does need prebleached and preferably toned hair (otherwise you'll have a yellow sheen to your hair and if you use a blue color, yellow+blue=green). If your hair is light enough already, then you don't need to do as much to it.

Also, with hair dyes like manic panic, raw, or special effects, I've found the best results by applying them to dry hair. No conditioner beforehand, either. Kool-aid dying is a totally different method, and you should look it up online before you do anything.

I wouldn't recommend it. i would think that Kool-Aid would work better.
That's if you want to dye your hair a wild color. But it will fade each time you wash your hair. It will also rub off on light clothing. But that shouldn't be a problem for us goths, eh?
I looked into this technique myself. I dabbled with the idea of dying my hair blue, but I think it would be smarter to just bite the bullet and buy the proper hair dye. Goodgoth has some good stuff.

I've done it.
It was horrible, faded and turned my hair pink.
Which I then had to wash with Vanish to get rid of it.

Definitley not recommended.

If you have a place like Sally's you have access to good quality stuff for more affordable price. They have Manic Panic there, and people have varying results with that stuff. I've used Manic Panic, Raw, and Special Effects. The only brand I haven't used is Punky, and they're all about 8-ten bucks respectively. You could get yourself set for about $12-15 by buying a bleach kit and one of the above options.
