Party Monster

The best movie and book ever. In my humble opinion.

It's a true story about the club kids from the 80s

It's my favourite movie of all time. The entire world created by Michael Alig and James St. James is just so damn awesome. Not to mention the style of the film was perfect for the story. And the acting was amazing.

Every time I watch it I want to be a club kid.

Ever is a stretch.

Great movie though. Club kids, stacks, and glowsticks.. and drugs.

I have never seen the whole movie. The imagery (and those fantastic costumes) had me hooked though. I wanted to be a club kid too... well except for the whole rampant drug use thing...

This movie is really well made, and James St. James' memoir is brilliant...almost (but not quite) makes me want to take ketamine...

I watched a documentary about it on the Crime Investigation channel... not the shocumentary but the one made before that, back in 1997/98. Made me love the movie even more.

James St. James is now officially one of my favourite people on earth.

I used to think it was alright, my cyber mates LOVED it, it was more on par with the imagery they loved and the lifestyle they led. They used to watch it so much and I don't think I could watch it again lol.

Very interesting film though, good choice of actors....can't fault it too much.

Honestly, although I love the movie, I don't get people who buy into the glamor aspect of it and forget about convenient details, like Micheal's overdose or, you know, the whole brutal murder thing. It's supposed to show how unsustainable the club lifestyle is because of the massive drug use that accompanies it. But sadly I have seen several people in the real life club scene who were 'inspired' by the image presented by movies like Party Monster, and have gone on to be drug dealers/abusers or just impoverished nightclub promoters.

And while the movie is fun, I thought that the two lead actors attempts to portray how over the top they were bordered on parody. It seemed like they were somewhere between acting like gay people and making fun of gay stereotypes, and it just wasn't convincing to me. In fact I thought their acting was bad enough to be distracting, though the costuming and story made up for it.

Apparently James St James and...er...thingy...were/are actually like that.

I don't know, I never met them. Just what I heard. I think they were meant to be portrayed as these ridiculously flamboyant, over the top, party people...not as a gay stereotype.

James St James actually said he hated the film because he'd never dress like a troll. That says it all for me.

Either way...the film is still "meh!" for me.

From all the interviews I've seen with the real James St. James and Michael Alig they do seem very much like the characters in the film. Seth Green even managed to imitate James' strange little laugh perfectly. What I did see in the acting though was that it was somewhat stylised... but I like that.

And in terms of glamour, the way I saw it, the overdoses and murder only made it more glamorous. Tragic, yes, but so intriguing and downright messed up. The movie was a piece of art that happened to be based on a true story, not a moralistic tale of the perils of drug use and partying.

(Argh, I flew halfway around the world today so forgive me if that made little sense.)
