Gothic goes EUROVISION

This year there is really something interesting going on in eurovision song contest. A gothic band Lordi has been selected to represent finland in this years song contest that's hosted by Athens!!! Check out video of Hard Rock Hallelujah HERE
.......Lordi took smashing victory in the qualification contest in finland despite critisism that "Lordi might send wrong message to the world". Dont know about messages, but I know their stageshow is HELLuva good and that they will make history by being the first gothic band ever to enter eurovision. Only obstacle for this historical event so far is some sort of movement of restaurant managers in greece that wants to prevent Lordi on participating and rising some sort of satanistical movement in Greece.

Well. In any case, if this movement fails in its attentions and Lordi wont be prevented on participating, there should be a show nobody want's to miss. So when the time is, turn on your tv's and vote for Lordi.

"This is the a-ROCK-alypse", "It's the day of ROCK-oning"?!

Thanks, I needed a laugh this morning!

For those unfamiliar with Eurovision, it's like a "contest" of who can write the most pompous, ridiculous, cringeworthy 80's-throwback song imaginable. It's so over-the-top camp that it's hard to believe there are actually (a minority of) people who take it seriously.

Oh, and there was actually a kinda "gothic" band, from Russia I think, that participated last year. Amazingly, it sucked less than this "band". So it's not like this is the first time anyone has attempted to "rock" the Eurovision.

Oh.... piss the hell off.
1. You are under the impression that people actually care.
2. Not everybody on this board is from Europe.
3. If that band is 'goth' then I am the prime minister of England.

Don't diss Eurovision. Quality TV entertainment.

Hours of bad camp Europeans convinced they have "still got it", performing god awful songs in rejected pride outfits while the presenters have the predictable hate/love relationship, ultimately commenting that music is love.

Oh and the best bit... Terry Wogan, voice overing the whole lot and taking the piss.

Eurovision is an institution and I'll certainly be missing it this year. Fortunately the US has plenty of replacement drivel on the TV.

Having watched Eurovision Song Contest a couple of times I think I don´t like it nor do I hate it. If nothing else is on any tv-channel I´ll watch it :-)

They portrait each country that´s participating in a short video just before the band actually performs. I like these short presentations the best - the music often is crap. But it´s interesting to hear different languages - also one can find more and more bands warbling away using the English language ;-) The dialect sounds funny most of the time...

Plus - here in Austria we´ve got that radio station FM4 that´ll have two comedians commenting the whole show. So you watch the show on your telly but you listen only to the radio station - that´s fun!!!

Just as it comes to my mind - the two russian (wannabee) lesbians from T.A.T.U. did also perform in one of the last Eurovision Song Contests ;-)

Well - it IS entertainment. You don´t need to like or hate it - it´ll be on air anyway *har-har*

Really I'm happy Lordi are representing us this year but I cannot take anyone seriously if she or he's fucking telling they are a goth band.

Just... please. People, get a life. Lordi = gothic?

Wow...

That was a great laugh, the angst of playing music for teenieboppers. *Puts hand to forehead and bites knuckle.* It reminded me of highschool, when the cheerleaders did the Thriller dance at a pep rally. Sadly, a friend and I knew the dance and were dancing along while hidden from view.
I love when metalheads debase the gothic community. I absolutely dispise American metal from the 80's, but if this is a throwback to European 80's metal, I'm very sorry for you. Ick....

And it so fits in with the overall ethos of Eurovision.

I mean, don't get me wrong, there are some countries which take it deadly seriously, but it's always a little bit camp and OTT and that's part of its, er, charm.

Strange, 'cause most of the time, from reading the threads, you almost get the impression that everyone on these boards is from the US or Canada. :P

I've watched half the video, and I dont realy like it. but it beats the hell out of the competition. But it won't win cause it's to shocking for most of the tipical viewers.

I think that says it all.

I've stopped viewing it 6 years ago.

Anything to do with the Eurovision cannot and should not be taken seriously. I wish I could see that video, but youtube.com is blocked at work due to it being "tasteless & offensive" (I work for the video games publisher who released Leisure Suit Larry. Pot, meet kettle etc.) But there is no doubt that if the band has any "Goth" aspirations, it is a poor and cheesy rip-off.
Anyone seen the Father Ted episode "Song for Europe"? It's a fantastic and spot-on jibe at the hallowed competition, on which the emerald isle used to base its national self-esteem.
And horrorgirl, just because we're not all from Europe doesn't mean that something particularly Eurocentric is automatically irrelevant. The Eurovision has a universal appeal. It's like watching a train crash. Or a beauty pageant. It's sickening, horrific, and makes you rush back to the comforting arms of Nietzsche.

[sings] "My lovely horse... running through the fields... "

I wonder how they got away with that episode. With, of course, the double-edged jibe of Belgium doing better than them! Great stuff.

Perhaps the contest should come with a health warning?

Side effects may include split sides, sudden loss of bladder control, uncontrollable shaking with laughter, and an urge to dress up in blue satin

Well, they made it through to the final apparently. I think I just have to watch...

...sat on a commode, just in case of any nasty laughter accidents.

I could not have stopped laughing when I heard Lordi is playing on eurovision. I even thought of going to Athens for a weekend to see it. TV is OK but nothing like a good laughter on the very spot of this charade.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that they wear the outfits from the video...

Now where's that commode...
