Everyone has their own reasons. I started out appreciating the fashion, then got into the music.

As do most people. Y'know, there's not really much else to appreciate except the music and the associated clothes.
I highly doubt anybody here's going to spin a tale of woe about how abuse as a child led them to express their selves through face paint if that's what you were hoping.

No, I was hoping for the truth.

Yeah, but the truth is that goth is a sub-culture merely based around music and a style of dress.
Most people here that consider their self a goth probably did so after they heard a song on the radio or the TV and thought it was cool.
That's gonna make for one boring thread.

Because we're so deep and brooding and poetic.

That's a stupid question. Same reason someone becomes anything. It suits us.

I gave in after peer pressure. It´s easier to just assume a label when it is given to you than to fight it.

Alot of my friends were doing the `skater`thing, so I tried to differ from them and started listening to Manson, then Cradle, then progressed to VNV Nation, Joy Division and Bauhaus. Hey, I had to start somewhere. The fashion came with the music + mindset.

I like to dress in black, have a long, black leather jacket ( which apparently screams 'goth' to them), so it just stuck. But I do enjoy all the stereotypes such a reading Poe, Anne Rice, dressing in what is perceived to be 'goth' style and such.

Poe and Anne Rice should NEVER be mentioned in the same sentence.

Hmmm...when I was a little kid, I dressed like a hobo. Then, instead of wearing pink and Hannah Montana, I spent almost three years wearing the same black skinny jeans and striped jumper. When I grew up a bit and started taking more care over my appearance, I just started dressing like people I thought looked cool. Then I was labelled a goth.

I know they should not, but like I was saying, it's a stereotype for 'goths' to know about Poe and Rice.

Every couple months someone comes to this site and asks the same stupid question. It just goes to show that people are more turned on by the goth look than repulsed by it.

Shun it in public and pretend it's silly, then come anonymously online and under a disingenuous pretense ask people 'Why on earth would you do such a thing to yourself? LOL".

Necrotansy, you're boring and your question is pompous tripe. There's no way you're actually asking this question with any sort of real interest. If you are, then you aren't asking with any real intelligence.

Experiment over. Go back to 4chan, troll.

I friend of mine introduced me to some bands that are considered goth that I happened to appreciate. The fashion came some time later.

I just thought you should all know that, every time one of these threads is created, I comb through all your replies and create for you a point total. Every mention of 'music' counts for one point, for but every use of 'attitude', 'mindset', 'mentality', 'spiritual' or 'way of being', I detract one point. I plan to relay this data to god, and I expect it will be factored in to your final judgment.

I am not here to entertain anybody. And I am not trying to sound intelligent.
And if this question is so damned stupid, like you say, then why do I get so many replies, hmm? I am just trying to understand what it means to be a 'goth'.

I started becoming more depressed and introspective as a teen and started wearing more black. At that time, people started calling me a goth and it just stuck. Otherwise, I'm not really actually sure I'm anything at all. So, I guess because other people told me I was.

Depends.

Brutal honesty? It's better to dress all in black and have people call you a goth instead of calling you something else, like that fat nerdy kid who'll never get laid.

MOST goths that I've met became goth because their initial reaction to being an "outcast" in society led them to believe it was a good move. Vampires are sexier than a geek. o_0

I became a "goth" because it naturally seemed to suit my person. I don't think people choose to become a goth on the whole, it's just an area that they naturally seem to gravitate towards.

For me it started with an obsession with Count Dracula has a kid (my mother used to make me capes made from old material in charity shops), and then Duckula came on TV as a kid... then I saw the Munsters... then the Addams Family... then it was sneaking downstairs to watch Hammer Horror while my mother was asleep from drinking... and I think from that point my initial obsession with horror gravitated me towards people who shared a similar interest in the dark and alternative later on in life.

I'm not saying that goth is horror, far from it. But I do think my early interest in horror had a part to play in my later lifestyle choices.
