"Deaf" boy found cotton bud in ear

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_west/7214066.stm

A boy who has been partially deaf for nine years was suddenly cured - when a cotton wool bud popped out of his ear.
Jerome Bartens was diagnosed as deaf in his right ear when he was just two and has struggled at school ever since.

But Jerome, now 11, was suddenly able to hear clearly again as he played with friends in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.

He said he heard a popping sound, then found the tip of a cotton wool bud in his ear.

His family believe Jerome must have put the bud in his ear as a toddler and the centimetre-long cotton tip came off the plastic stem.

Jerome's father Carsten, 45, said: "It was just incredible - his hearing returned to normal in an instant.

"He was cured as suddenly as he became deaf. I had always suspected Jerome had stuck something in his ear when he was little and that was causing the problem.

"But the doctors and hearing specialists said it was wax and he would probably grow out of it.

"I am amazed they didn't spot something as obvious as a cotton wool bud."

Jerome has kept the waxy bud as a souvenir of his nine years of silence on his right.

His family believe that as he grew the bud has been forced out - and finally came out nine years later.

He is due to be examined by hearing experts later this week - and his father is taking along the cotton wool bud as proof of his "miracle cure".

Single father Mr Bartens has now complained to his GP and hearing specialists who examined Jerome over the years.

He said: "It has held Jerome back in school and caused him problems in communicating with his friends."

Lorry driver Mr Bartens - who has two older daughters Takita, 16, and Tiffany, 14, - says he is "thrilled" Jerome's hearing has come back.

He said: "If he was playing down the garden I would have to shout for him eight or nine times before he would respond.

"But now he has 100% hearing and he's just a normal boy again."

Jerome said: "I can hear much better now and I think I'll be much happier at school now my ear does not ache all the time.

"I was just playing pool in the church hall when my ear made a popping noise. It was very strange at first to be able to hear everything.

"But now I'm getting used to it - it's great that people don't have to shout to me or that I don't have to turn my head all the time."

The stupidity of some people annoys me, especially the stupidity of medically trained "professionals".

How the hell could they not see he had something stuck in his ear?

Damn scary, really.

They said it was wax, and didn't try to do anything about it? When I was a kid, I had too much wax build-up that was making me go deaf in both my ears, so they put little tubes in my ears that made the wax drain properly. If they had tried that (or, hell, tried anything), they would've realized that there was something jammed in there.

What I'm more interested in is why the guy and his father have to take a glamour model shoot just for an article about a cotton wool bud. It looks like the cover photo of NME magazine.

You can buy things for wax in shops! It's like a tube with a wick and you light it and it draws the wax out. Although that may have set the cotton bud on fire ...
Seriously, if anything proves that "specialists" are over paid, this is it.

I seen a man get a COCKROACH taken out of his ear at the hospital.

But ewh...What kind of doctor wouldn't have been able to see a piece of cotton in that boy's ear?

What do you think the odds are the father will file a lawsuit against the doctors? Like he said, it did cause his son years of academic struggle.

I would aswell. I know people of todays society generally file a lawsuit for ANYTHING but I reckon this kid deserves some from reparations. It might have been his fault he stuck the damn thing in there, but it's the doctors resposibility to sort it out.

How did they not see that!? It's fucking huge! according to stuff stuck in your ear terms.

The Doctors should have a lawsuit filed against them, they caused a kid trouble for years through their own incompetance.

Well he could of been of Spanish descent, mainly because the Spanish have apparently developed a trait where ear wax develops quickly in order to help keep bugs out of our ears.

Do they really?
Ants are a pain in the ass but to specially grow extra thick ear wax is a tad extreme.

Not really, considering it must've been at one time very important.

I guess ear wax is slightly more attractive than hair, so maybe.

Earwax lubricates the ear and traps bacteria from getting into the middle and inner parts of the ear. However, with modern medicine, it really is not integral. Quite like body hair. Thousands of years ago, it was important to help protect the body from the cold and trap bacteria. Or wisdom teeth. Or your appendix.

I was thinking more along the lines of flying bugs but ants too I suppose.

Appendix was more like hundreds of thousands years ago when it was useful.
And wisdom teeth was because tooth lose was deadly out in the wild..our ancestors who grew back teeth and a later age had an advantage ..also our jaws was bigger..
