Cultures Project.

Hey guys (and girls),

So I have to do this project on a subculture for my youth subcultures class. The project consists of selecting a subculture and pretty much taking some sort of angle on it and investigating it. As a result I chose you, because let's face it, you're the most interesting and intriguing people I can think of. So anyway, my teacher is pretty set on having some first-hand accounts from "insiders" on the culture and my angle is how members of the gothic culture vs. how the media preceives the gothic culture. Therefore, I have found my way here and I humbly ask the members of this board on any comments on how they see themselves, how they think the media preceives them, and any other ideas they wish to share. Also, if you'd like to comment on the below article, as to whether or not you believe it to be right or wrong it would be much appreciated:

Google "Goth with a sledgehammer" -> Click the first link... since it won't let me post a link because I'm new.

Thanks in advance,
Rich.

As a side note/background story about myself, I found the article above when I was about 13 and decided that it embodied my life and from that point on I have considered myself a goth even though I do not actively participate in the culture.

You don't have to ask for accounts of the goth scene from us (and most people here aren't going to want to give you one anyway). Why don't you just read thru the archives? It will be a much more non-intrusive method and thus yield more accurate results.

It seems as though everyone has their own idea of what makes something or someone gothic. In the beginning of the subculture there actually was something more to it than the music but now there isn't. The music did come from the subculture and now that has been reversed. The intangible part of the subculture has fallen away, there is no longer a sociopolitical aspect to it, the simple fact that there is now such a thing as corp goth proves this point.

You may find these threads to be helpful:

What is goth porn? (a girl researching the subject for a class and while it does focus on the fetishizing of the subculture some of it is rather interesting and could provide some useful information for you)

Goth vs poser (gives various members' opinions of what is and is not goth)

Tumbling down the rabbit hole (how some of us got into the scene)

All grown up (how to balance an adult life with the scene)
