Not a clue exactly what to call myself. I haven't been to a church or claimed to follow any denomonation, yet I have a few religious views that I keep to myself.
You're damned if you do or don't, so I keep the condemnation to myself.

I thought of something at philosophy today.
You all know that bullshit argument that is the teleological 'proof' for the existence of God?
It basically says that the universe is so perfect because if there was a slight difference in its laws, then it wouldn't even exist, therefore there must be a maker.
I assume you all understand why that's stupid, but let me mention in more words why that is just wrong:
First of all, if we are talking about how improbable the universe is, then Drake already responded to it in a very beautiful example with dices, but let's use game cards.
If I remember correctly, a piece of trivia is that there's more combinations of the order of the cards in a deck than there are seconds in the age of the universe.
So shuffle your cards a little bit. Congratulations, you've just created a miracle by religious standards. You have one combination that had only one chance out of 3600*24*365*14.5 billion (I'm too lazy to do the math of the number of seconds that have passed)
Impossibly small probabilities are not uncommon in the universe. In fact they're the norm.
So that's that for probability.
But there's still the fact that if we changed one tiny thing in the universe it wouldn't even exist, like if the speed of light had been .0001% faster without changing the way time acts on the object in motion.
That's what I was thinking in philosophy.
But this is a false way to see things. The speed of light is that speed in this universe because it couldn't possibly be otherwise.
The argument that there must be a god because the universe is so balanced has no more merit than saying there must be a god because every time there is a square, it is squared. If you curved a line a little, it wouldn't be a square anymore; it can only exist as it is because of its intrinsic identity. The universe is just a very big square - I mean, it does contain everything that exists.
But why would anyone claim that there must be a god because a straight line is always straight?

Maybe they feel as though if the line wasn't straight but... erm... bended the other way instead... that the world wouldn't exist. They do think that way after all... at least all of the crazed fanatical ones I've met anyways. They do think the world centers around their thoughts, etc...

“People go to church for the same reasons they go to a tavern: to stupefy themselves, to forget their misery, to imagine themselves, for a few minutes anyway, free and happy”

I'm athiest. I concur with Jillian today on the points he makes about the universe. The word "miracle" should be more widely acknowledged as another word for "coincidence".

That's Bakunin. I believe it's from God and the State, which is my favorite of the things Bakunin wrote.
Edit: I just realized your signature gives it away. This is no game at all.

That would be a 30 post cyber-fart in the interweb wind. Not much to mess with, really.
And why is it all the people who shout the loudest about how christian they are also say the most bigoted, intolerant things in the same paragraph?
Lakita, you got more than swearing vulgarity and hate speech to joust with?

I suppose I'm a theist, but I'm not religious at all. And I'm perfectly happy with that.
