Pepsi apologizes for 'bad taste' iPhone app

Soft drink giant PepsiCo is apologizing for a branded iPhone application touting its Amp Energy drink after consumers complained the app is insensitive to women. The free AMP UP Before You Score is touted in the App Store as a "road map to success for your favorite kinds of women -- 24 in all," identifying women according to types including "Women's Studies Major," "Cougar," "Trouble" and "Out-of-Your-League Girl."

The app offers a pick-up "cheatsheet" including "surefire opening lines," and encourages users to brag about their conquests via email, Facebook or Twitter.

Of 384 current App Store ratings, 185 award AMP UP Before You Score one star--"sexist and stupid" reads one user review, and another calls it "a great new case study for branded apps gone wrong."

Now Pepsi is turning to its Amp Energy Twitter account to apologize for the application. "Our app tried 2 show the humorous lengths guys go 2 pick up women," the tweet reads. "We apologize if it's in bad taste & appreciate your feedback." The post was also retweeted to Pepsi's official Twitter feed.

As of this morning, AMP UP Before You Score remains available for download from the App Store.

Actually you have no avi so there is no picture by your name. I took the initiative and assumed that you couldn't figure out the difference between an avi and a profile pic so I did go to your profile where I found a pic but it isn't of you as it is an anime style fairy, that doesn't indicate your gender at all, plenty of people have avi and profile pics that are of characters they like as well as pictures that they happen to find appealing, get some common fucking sense.

I really understand how you feel. I'm bi-sexual, and so is my ex-boyfriend...it kind of takes some getting used to when you're around other people who like to judge, but I'm over that now. Anyways, my ex-bf is bi, and we had fancied the idea to still be together, but still have somebody else. In my mind, it meant that I could have a girlfriend and he could have a boyfriend, but he meant that we both would have more than one boyfriend or girlfriend.We broke up for other reasons though, and I do have my "wives" and alot of bi and gay guy friends that I hang around.

LOL...dude, gothicdream is a girl(knowing that she's my weird sister). Just thinking that you should know that.....who knows though, my sister probably wants to be a dude someday(probably).

I on the otherhand am staying on my path of bi-sexuality, and even if i wasn't, I wouldn't judge people just because of what they are or want to be...I have racist friends, and I don't care(it bothers alot of my other friends though).

A US university president has said he is "disturbed" that a psychology professor allowed a demonstration of a motorised sex toy in a lecture hall.

Morton Schapiro of Northwestern University called the decision to allow a naked woman to demonstrate use of the device last month "poor judgement".

About 100 students observed the proceedings following a lecture session for a class on human sexuality.

Attendance was voluntary and students had been warned what to expect.

Controversial topics

On 21 February, psychology professor Michael Bailey held a lecture on sexual arousal, with a focus on certain aspects of female physiology, according to a statement he released on Wednesday.

Prof Bailey said another guest lecturer, Ken Melvoin-Berg, had proposed the demonstration and he could not think of a legitimate reason why the students should not have that opportunity in the name of inquiry.

"Student feedback for this event was uniformly positive," Prof Bailey said.

The demonstrator, Faith Kroll, told the Chicago Tribune she enjoyed the attention.

"I was more than happy to," she said. "We had fun with it. I'm an exhibitionist."

On Thursday, Mr Schapiro said in a statement it was in the nature of a university to teach and research controversial topics.

But he said the demonstration "represented extremely poor judgement on the part of our faculty member" and said he was "troubled and disappointed".

"I simply do not believe this was appropriate, necessary or in keeping with Northwestern University's academic mission," he said.

He promised an investigation and to clarify "what constitutes appropriate pedagogy".

Whether or not it was appropriate depends on the details. I could see this being acceptable in upper level courses on human sexuality, female arousal is a topic that still isn't terribly well understood and when researching it you use study participants and sometimes you see them in very intimate situations. That being said this would not have been appropriate in an undergrad human sexuality course, which a lot of people do take just because they just want to talk about sex and don't approach it with a scholarly intent. It would also depend on exactly how things were presented.

Yeah, this would be pretty inappropriate if it was an undergrad course, but are grad school classes usually that large? Call me a faggy liberal arts student but the ones here are usually small.

It depends on the school and whether it was open to all students in that program or just one specific class. Heck at my school even the freshman lectures were smaller than that but I went to an tiny school.

I think the Chicago Tribune article has a few more details. The facts that it was after school, not required attendance for the course and people could voluntarily stay or leave as they wished before the demonstration, should matter. But this is the midwestern U.S and it appears the school administration is bowing to public pressure from conservative citizens.

I think it's wild, and it sounds like a scene out of one of my wank fantasies. But Solumina is very right about the dreadful lack of understanding overall in our society about human female arousal and sexuality (heaven forbid any man gets his education about what a female orgasm is like from porn films!) So just from that point of view, it actually sounds like a good idea to me.
